Someone check the media guide. Did these two teams ever play against each other? It's an odd pairing...no matter the sport. And to think Missouri has more foreign players than Hawaii is odder, given Hawaii's rep for recruiting foreign players and the state's "Melting Pot" identity.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Yes, Missouri has more foreign players but that is due to their assistant coaches Deng Yang and Chen Feng, who have helped the Tigers establish a Chinese pipeline of players. Hawai'i will be in a familiar situation as this is the 8th straight regional appearence for the Wahine. Mizzou otoh, is playing in their first regional in recent memory, perhaps their first ever regional (I'll have to research) so experience wise, Hawai'i has an obvious advantage. I think Hawai'i moves on and beats Missouri in this one.

well, many on this board who responded to my posts see me as being way out in my comments. Maybe I am, cuz I am no volleyball expert, i am just another wahine fan. But I can be objective. Of course, I think the Wahine will beat Missouri. But I still am worried. The Missouri team I saw losing in 4 to Nebraska was pretty good.

I thought so but I wasn't entirely sure and I didn't want to be like (R)uffda or Gorf and post things without doing some research first. ;D

I think Hawaii will have a lot of confidence coming off the Texas win, but this will be a different type of challenge for them. I think they will win, but it probably won't be very easy. Mizzou's block can be inconsistent, which bodes well for the Wahine. In a videocast against Tennessee I saw really early in the season, the Tigers had a lot of problems against UT's Kristen Andre on the slide. Andre is very good, but Prince could be better on that attack, so I think Hawaii would look to run that as much as possible. I think Missouri's biggest strength is their legitimate five option offense. Hunter is a good setter, and she has a lot of options. Hawaii's blockers will face quite a challenge if the Tigers are in system. I would expect an offensive shootout in this one, so it would help if Hawaii could find a lineup and stay with it, as the Tigers have been consistent with that all season.

My main concern in terms of Hawaii is their lineup. Like bucky415 said, Hawaii's starting lineup has been a revolving door and it would be nice to have a set one. I do think what Shoji did with Houston and Mason playing front row and Arnott and Hittle replacing them in the back row worked pretty well.
Also I don't know if it's just me but does Sarah Mason's play remind anyone of Lily. During the Texas match she hit this one shot at a sharp crosscourt angle by twisting her wrist. It wasn't hit with a lot of power, but she placed it incredibly well. I remember Lily hitting that exact same shot during a match against San Jose State in 2002.

Totally agree with you pineapple. I really think Sarah and Jamie, like you said, could become that 1-2 punch we had with Lily and Kim. Hopefully both will improve their passing and defending skills for next year.

This will be a great matchup in the sweet 16 -- 2 great setters with a lot of weapons at their disposal. Advantage to whichever team can steady their ball control and get the pass to the setter to work her magic. Only saw Mizzou play in their 5-game loss to Neb -- Hunter, Vander Koi and Wilson stood out and impressed me. Hawaii will have to be really disciplined with their block, as Hunter is so good at spreading the offense around.

If Hawaii plays exactly the same as they played against Texas, they will win. Mizzou is a very good team but not that much different than Texas when everything is working. Texas was not covering the back row like they usually do, they weren't blocking effectively and couldn't find a way around Hawaii's block. I don't see Missouri doing much better, Hawaii in 4.
