I know this will irk a lot of VT fans, (hardcore VB fans) and rightly so, because of NU's success in the sport. It was easy to sell the country on the CWS cause Nebraska was never in it. This may not be so easy. Florida Head Coach Mary Wise Opening statement “All eyes are on Omaha this weekend. We’re talking about 13,000 pre-sale tickets. This is a different world. Credit Omaha, the University of Nebraska and this state for embracing volleyball. If they decided to put the Final Four here every year, I would be one coach who would be all for it. They’ve done it for baseball and if our mantra would be for years to come “let’s get to Omaha,” I think that would be a good thing for women’s volleyball.”The rest of the press conference can be found at www.huskers.com

She elaborates a little more:
On the possibility of having the Final Four in Omaha every year “If there’s another city that could sellout an arena that size, let’s go there. Right now, in this day and age, it seems Omaha is the place. We have to grow our (attendance at the) championship. Our championship is dictated by geography. The way we grow our championship is with attendance. And if it means coming to Omaha for a few years, selling it out and building it before we can take it out cross country, I think it would be good for our sport. There are certain things you give up when you’re trying to grow the sport. It is something, as coaches, that we should be discussing.”

I will throw out a few advantages:
1. Middle of the country 2. Proven volleyball fan base as opposed to say Richmond, Maine, etc 3. Great facilities. The Hilton is connected I believe to the arena. 4. Players would be treated first class as evidenced by the CWS. Autograph sessions I know are a big draw for the CWS. I think these elite VB players could expect the same.
Disadvantage
1. Its cold 2. NU has a decent chance at being there, turning into homecrowd advantage. However, with that being said this is assuming that NU would even make it, which is far from certain. Better chance than average, but still no gurantee. Also if this is the case you can bet NU will not be playing at home during Regionals. This is where they would be vulnerable and thus alleviate the fear that NU would have home court advantage during the entire tourney. Which is completely understandable. Utimately we are a few years off anyway as the FF is booked until at least 2009?

It's similar to hijacking a thread on this board. Trying to hijack volleyball from the west. "Let's go to Hawaii" resounds with more energy. Remember the disappointment of the texas St team when they learned they weren't going to Hawaii?

All four finalists would be rewarded for making the final 4- some time soaking up the sun on the beach in december.

Remember the disappointment of the texas St team when they learned they weren't going to Hawaii? Well I know the Wahine will have strong feelings as they also have a strong VB base. But as far as hijacking from the West in general, I think the west's (apart from Hawaii and maybe now Washington) apathy for the sport in spite of their success is going to play a role in the decision. One only needs to look at last week's attendance figures. So in that regard (except for Hawaii) this is their own fault.

College World Series. (baseball) It's Omaha's biggest sporting event. Remember we have no professional teams to distract us. It really is one of the great NCAA championships. Omaha has hosted the event for over 50 years. Anybody will tell you that it is run very well. In some ways its similiar to VB. Normally players play in front of a few thousand. (if they are lucky, which would be about 15 schools) But when they come to Rosenblatt they play in front of 18000 plus for EACH session. Its a week long affair. This is WITHOUT Nebraska in it. You can imagine the chaos when Nebraska is as they have been the last few years.

Hawaii's attendance average per match is about 3,000 more then Nebraska's. The 10,000 attendance figure was several years ago. Now I'll bet it may even exceed the 13,000 currently cited for Nebraska.

College World Series. The college baseball tournament. The town I grew up in hosts the NAIA College World Series. It's always fairly well attended and a big event in the town, only 30,000 people living there. But the campus that the World Series is hosted on, LCSC, has won probably more than their fair share of NAIA Championships because of it, as well.
