Steven Tsai is right Calling all party poopers So much for the aloha spirit: • In a curious address to the coaches of all UH sports yesterday, the athletic department’s compliance officer said he wanted to evict the fan who held a sign welcoming a Rainbow Wahine volleyball recruit during last week’s match. • Several UH men’s basketball players, who had painted letters on their chests to spell out words supporting the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, were denied entry into the Stan Sheriff Center because they were not wearing shirts. blogs.honoluluadvertiser.com/index.php?blog=9&title=calling_all_party_poopers&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

They would have had to evict a lot of the fans, including the 3 ladies who give the Wahine leis every game. Can you imagine them getting evicted for their Alix signs?

I think the SSC security folks can be a little over-nazi-ist at times. It sure lends to a very non-intense atmosphere.
Well, except for all the Gator fans they let sit in the UH student section with their face paint and signs during the UF-UH match. Nothing was said to them, but some gents who took off their t-shirts with painted chests were asked to reclothe themselves.

No bodypaint allowed? Good thing I go to UF...the KSU coach actually stopped talking during to her team during a timeout to compliment me on my painting skills.

What is the big deal about signs or no shirts? Geez. Definite party poopers. Back in the day, I painted my body and went to many volleyball games that way at UF. I'd be disappointed in UF if they didn't allow such things.

• In a curious address to the coaches of all UH sports yesterday, the athletic department’s compliance officer said he wanted to evict the fan who held a sign welcoming a Rainbow Wahine volleyball recruit during last week’s match. Spirited and well-meaning boosters (representatives of athletic interest) are, I suspect, the group that give the most headaches to NCAA compliance officers. At MN, there is a coach or other official chaperone who is with the recruit pretty much all the time during the match, and at the post-match reception if they're brought up for it. The main thing they seem to be there for is to stop boosters from coming up and potentially violating NCAA regulations w/ the recruit. I've heard that for some sports, the coach gives the recruit a button to wear which reads " Hi! I'm a recruit. Please don't talk to me." Complying with the NCAA regulations will probably sap the Aloha or any other spirit... but it's necessary as long as those regs are around.

The regulations may be unrealistic as they are not enforceable. The definition of "booster" has to be delimited; it cannot be left as it is now to mean all fans. This encroaches on freedom of expression and puts an unfair onus on the schools. Schools have no control over fans.

So these dorks at UH that ban our very own spirited, UH Basketball players who have body paint on, yet they don't ban Vili Fehoko (UH "Warrior" mascot) and his sons who also wear body paint? Or do they get immunity by default?
Talk about stupid.

Some people have gotten upset with me for mentioning recruiting regs. I'd just hate it for anyone (especially the recruit) to be a victim of someone else's overenthusiasm. About the worst I've heard is of people paying for strategically located billboards pleading for a certain basketball/football recruit to come to a school. I think this was done to show that there was no "lack of institutional control" if the NCAA gets wind of it. They were protecting their own interests - that of possibly landing Klineman and not accumulating a minor NCAA infraction.
