Wow! Helluva lift for MN. I was not expecting it, and it goes counter to the "punish only" theory of the poll.

As a Cal fan, I marvel at how the AVCA voters manage to keep my favorite team up there in the polls. I'll repeat my favorite line about staying the top 10. Well - it's good for recruiting.

I'm surprised too, but basically what they did was kick OSU and Tennessee out, and moved Minnesota into the vacancy.
Notice:
*Cal only drops 1 spot AND only loses 48 pts. This is odd, even for the Pac10 exception. They lost twice.
*LSU moves up, but they lost points.
*Hawaii drops 5 spots? Seems harsh, but 4 spot gain last week was generous.

'Tis amazing! Go 0-2 and drop one spot. Purdue, with a similar record, also goes 0-2 on the road and drops 5 spots. And, 346 points.

I guess it's different enough with a sweep from the #14 team and a 3-1 loss to the #23 team. Cal had the sweep by #4 UCLA and a 3-1 loss to #5 USC. I won't pretend to understand. I'm just hoping that Hana Cutura's foot is reasonably well in a few weeks. If she's healthy and productive, everything else seems to work better.

Speaking of feet, does anyone know Carlini's status?

Speaking of feet, does anyone know Carlini's status? they played quite well without her last weekend. But I'm sure it would be nice to have her against MN on Wed. I hope that's a good match.

Could someone explain to me how Tennessee remains on the poll? South Carolina and FSU gave Florida more of a run for their money than UT did. Are these polls based on last year's results?

Missouri loses at home to Nebraska 3-0 and gains 3 spots and points. I know people say you get punished for losing in the AVCA poll, but it does seem to matter who you lose to. Losing to the #1 when you're not in the top 10 seems to be a loss you won't be punished for. I'd say the same thing happened to Cal, to a lesser extent. The AVCA predicted they'd lose twice, and they did. So they didn't get punished much.

*Hawaii drops 5 spots? Seems harsh, but 4 spot gain last week was generous. I'll agree that the 4 spot gain last week was generous. It only came about because teams above them lost. I don't think it was on the basis of their wins over Utah State and Nevada. Losing to a lower ranked team is not good so I don't have a problem with the 5 spot drop either.

The AVCA predicted they'd lose twice, and they did. So they didn't get punished much. I would say yes and no. Just losing to someone ranked higher is not sufficient. It needs to be either a lot higher (say, #20 vs #10), or basically to anyone in the top 5. That's where Cal came off this week. You don't get hit hard when losing to a team ranked in the top 5 UNLESS you are in the top 5 yourself. I would predict the loser of USC/UCLA to drop a couple of spots (note, however, that Cal could have been penalized two places, but that Purdue's drop left them in the #8 spot) Purdue was hit harder because they lost to two teams not ranked in the top 5. However, a six spot hit is pretty harsh either way. That's more like a loss to an unranked team.
