Just out of curiosity, but if I was applying to schools I would want to go to the following for athletic/academic reasons: 1) Stanford- yeah they are not an awesome team but they have the talent and the school is extremely prestigious in both athletics + academics. 2)UCLA- Great reputation. But I would go only if I knew I was good enough to some day play, like I was top 10 in the Fab50 3)Pepperdine- Just awesome coaching, school is pretty reputable too 4)USC- yeah they suxed last year but they are ranked like 26th in the top 32 schools in the nation. Plus they are rebuilding the program w/ the new coaches, +they have loyal alumni. 5) Hawaii, Long Beach State- If I solely wanted to focus on volleyball n' I wasn't a great student. Where would u want to go n' why?

Don't laugh, but, as far as volleyball schools go, IPFW really is up there. Academically, get a Big 10 degree from Indiana or Purdue, depending on the major. Volleyballwise, it is the school's top sport. Great crowds for the good matches(ask Long Beach, UCLA, Lewis, PSU, etc), great community support, and they know their volleyball. Great media coverage. Coaching staff gets along with the players very well. University president is pro-volleyball, big-time. Only drawback is campus atmosphere, but, other than that, great place to play vb.

IPFW has had some great teams in the past. Had the priviledge of watching them play in the NCAA's a few years ago held at UCLA. That Hector Soto was the highest leaper and hardest hitter I had ever seen. What is he doing now?

I think he is in Belgium or Bulgaria, playing for the top club team in one of those countries. Also plays in PR in the spring/summer. Is doing very well.

Why can't you accept the truth, Cynic?

I can't speak for Long Beach because I don't go there, but I do attend UH, and many of the men's volleyball players are excellent students. Hawaii may not be as prestigeous as Stanford or UCLA, but it does have great business and law schools. It also is the best place in the US to study marine science (obviously). UH's classes are definitely not as hard as Stanford, but Hawaii has the reputation of being one of the hardest school to graduate from (this is because there are so many required couses- it is designed for a five-year graduation plan).
I happen to agree with Cynic. The bottom line is that Curious observer is a quasi-troll because his remark about Hawaii and LBSU is offensive.

Offensive but the truth!
Marine Biology, definitely no! Have you heard of Woodshole and Scripps! Open your brains!

Face the facts Hawaii is not an academically prestigous school. For example, students in humanities often feel shortchanged. According to one such student, "Here the sciences get all the money and places like the business/art/economics buildings are a disgrace." In addition, the average SAT is 1088. Thats just barely above the SAT score that some football players have to get to qualify to play. As for Long Beach, it is a CAL STATE SCHOOL! Nuff' said!

I don't know about marine biology, but UH is world known for its Oceanography program. Many (outside of UH) consider it the best in the world. Same goes for astronomy. With the Mauna Kea observatory, it has facilities that no other university offers. The meteorology dept is also considered the best in tropical meteorology. Geology is also world class as well as the Geophysics dept.
I'm really only familiar with the natural sciences dept, so I can't comment on other disciplines.

What about UCI? They have a great new coach, John Speraw, who came from the top program UCLA and UCI is very good academically. Look for UCI to be a school that will be a threat, soon.

UCI will get stronger for sure under Speraw. He is a quality person and a quality coach. They recieved full scholarship funding this year for the first time and now have some missing puzzle pieces in place. JS will have to build the reputation up, but it won't take long. There are a lot of quality players, and not too many quality places to go, so he should be able to build up that program. The sport needs more good programs. If he does well I'm hoping UCSD will consider coming up to D-1 and adding another program to the D-1 ranks.

Even if UCSD does move to D-1, it won't make much difference since they won't award athletic scholarships.
