Volleyball to Take Overseas Trip
MADISON, Wis.-
The University of Wisconsin volleyball team will play five matches and visit five different countries as part of its 13-day foreign trip. The Badgers will visit the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy from May 30-June 12. Per NCAA rules, teams are allowed to take an overseas training and competition trip once every four years.
“This is going to be a great experience for our players and we've planned the timing of it specifically for this group,” explained UW Coach Pete Waite. “Our largest class will be seniors next season and they've been our starting core for the last three years.”
The UW will take all 13 returning players on the trip. NCAA rules prohibit incoming freshmen from join the team.
“A trip like this challenges our players in ways they can't imagine and they'll grow and mature as a team because of it,” said Waite. “Dealing with different teams, languages, foods, bathroom facilities and cultures puts a certain stress on the body and mind. We welcome that atmosphere because it's much like going on the road in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament. You have to be at your best even when unforeseen problems pop up along the way.”
The Badgers will play five matches on the trip, including two matches against the Italian Junior National team. The UW will also play KP Brno, a first-division team in the Czech Republic leagues.
“The teams we play will be strong and at times older and more experienced than our team,” said Waite. “We'll be playing every other day and usually in different cities so we'll have little time to prepare for each team, facility or crowd.
“It's not a secret that almost every team that made it to the NCAA final four last year took a foreign trip just like we are. We'll do everything we can to take advantage of this opportunity to be a better team when we return.”
The team will begin practicing for the trip on May 21 and will be practicing daily (with the exception of May 23) from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the UW Field House.
