Just wanted to ask some of you left-coasters who are in the know. Who will be the next coach at Santa Barbara when (if)Kathy "retires" at the end of the season?

I would like to think that she isn't going to retire at the end of this season. I think that while it's fairly obvious she isn't going to make the postseason for the first time ever, that she can still salvage a solid team and go out with a bit of dignity intact. She has had a very storied career at UCSB and does not deserve to be tread on while things are down.

She has had a great career, and probably should be given the choice to come back. Having said that, she should retire. It does not appear that she or anyone else there, is enjoying it, they are underachieving, and will find it hard to impossible to get top recruits at their rate of transfer and dissatisfaction. The program can't go fwd without a fresh start. I hope she loves Santa Barbara Volleyball enough to know what is best for it.

Jeff Stork(cal state Northridge) would be a good candidate, or maybe Brent Hillard(San Diego)

Hey how about the 805 area code legend Mike Maas? Be a smooth transition from one ranting and raving lunatic to another ranting and raving lunatic.

That would be a bush league move for Wade at this point. UoP gave him a chance, he still has plenty of work to do. Hilliard is a great choice. John Wallace may be interested. But let's face it, who would want to live in Santa Barbara?

It just seems like this is the ideal job for Stevenson. Can he jump ship again?

That would be a good fit, actually. The Gauchos play in the Thunderdome, and if Wade as their coach let one go (as he is often known to do during stressful points in a tight match), it gives a completely new definition to the venue's name.

Interesting. I thought she was trying to wait out Sue G at Riverside to see who is going to hang in there the longest.

The real question is whether we can attract a top coach. UCSB is a very high cost of living area with low pay, especially for asst. coaches. It makes it hard to recruit and retain good assistants. Also, travel looks to be restricted now, and if you want to recruit out of state/country it costs you two scholarships per player.
Some of that might be alleviated if the next coach is good at fund raising and community outreach (kissing up to boosters.) Those two things are certainly not Kathy's forte.
I think Stevenson might be a good match for UCSB, but it seems like he's got a lot of support at Cal Poly. I agree with IB, I would like to see Kathy not go out after a season like this one. She is only 9 wins from 800 and we aren't going to get another 9 wins this year, barring a miracle of biblical old testament proportions. Also, I would really like to see us get a new, energetic AD before we start hiring any new coaches. Our present AD is old, has no rapport with the students, and is more interested in sitting on NCAA committees than in fund raising.
