To agent man.. Who teaches gays? Girls kissing girls on tv/...schools reported many young girls started mimicking after certain kisses. Parades showing same sex partners... MTV .. Queer eye for a straight guy.. The L word.. and liberal press reporting negatives about conservative family values... I still find it funny that you keep trying to tell us that the ranks of "liberals" is shrinking but the "liberal media" is still all powerful. If the "liberal media" is so powerful there would never be a successful "conservative" politician. The percentage of gays hasn't exploded, the percentage of those willing to admit to being gay has increased. That... ...and the "conservative" media is more into reporting on gays issues.  You were the first person in the thread to mention gays, if you didn't want the thread to turn from education to gays you could have left the issues of gays out of the thread. |

The Sodom and Gomorrah Story
In the book of Genesis (Chapter 19) the story is told of two visitors to the city of Sodom, who were in fact angels in disguise, visiting the house of Lot - a Jewish, and hence foreign, inhabitant of the city. The story goes:
"Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom - both young and old - surrounded the house. They called out to Lot 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them'. Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind them saying: 'No, my friends, don't do this wicked thing......'"
After this Lot offers his daughters to appease the crowd. Eventually the angels step in and manage to defeat the mob. Later on in the story, Sodom is destroyed because of the actions of the inhabitants of the city.
It is interesting to note that Lot is portrayed as the good man, the spiritual one, and yet his actions of offering his daughters to the crowd are reported without comment! To approve of this is to approve of rape.
To say that the city was destroyed because of homosexuality is misleading and ignores other parts of the Bible and a long tradition of interpretation of these texts. Firstly, the book of Isaiah (1:10 & 3:9) and Ezekiel (16:49) claim that social injustice and oppression of the poor was the root cause. Other parts of the Bible say that it was the city's treatment of visitors which was wrong. In the ancient world it was imperative in most cultures to treat visitors with respect and honour. Gang raping them would be quite offensive! Jesus says, in Luke's Gospel, that Sodom was destroyed because of inhospitality (Lk 10:12).
This interpretation continued in the Early Church and also in Jewish interpretations. The Midrash, a Jewish commentary, and an Early Church theologian called Origen, both state that it was this breaking of the rules on how to treat visitors that got Sodom into trouble.
Therefore, it can be argued from the Bible itself that the destruction of Sodom was because of oppression of the poor and mistreatment of outsiders; nothing to do with Lesbians and Gays. Feminist theologians will also want to question Lot's apparent willingness to hand his daughters over to a mad crowd to face certain death. To claim that trying to commit gang rape on strangers is equivalent to consenting gay or lesbian sex is to fly in the face of what the Bible itself says.

The first cases of aids ever reported being spread around the world were linked to sexual relations of a canadian flight attendant. I was trying to say that "most people" attribute hiv / aids to homosexual sex. If you were a better editor you'd have been able to understand that.  |

That's the theory--as is Bigfan's point about eating the monkey meat.
In North America. It had to spread from person to person in Africa first. There is no proof that this was through homosexual activity--although who knows.
The origins of the virus is still very, very murky--as are most of the nasty diseases coming out of Africa, like Ebola.
I take it you read The Band Played On, too? Great book.

New retroviruses jump from monkeys to humans Two new retroviruses - the type of virus which causes AIDS - have jumped from primates to humans, a new study reveals. The study of blood samples from nearly a thousand bushmeat hunters or handlers in Cameroon showed that at least six viruses had crossed from monkeys to the people who were exposed to freshly caught bushmeat. And two of these viruses have never been seen before in humans. The newly discovered human T-cell lymphotropic virus 3 (HTLV-3) and HTLV-4 are closely related to the known viruses, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. These are implicated in cancers like leukaemia and can cause inflammatory or neurological diseases. Retroviruses such as HTLV or HIV insert their genetic material into a host cell's DNA. The emergence of HIV is widely blamed on a primate retrovirus, SIV, jumping to humans. Previously, it was thought that the emergence of these viruses was limited by the rarity of successful cross-species transmission. But the identification of two entirely new human retroviruses from one study, along with a previous discovery by the same group that simian foamy viruses can jump from monkeys to humans, may be ominous. No fluke "What's increasingly clear is that the hunting and butchering of non-human primates is associated with the transmission of retroviruses to humans," says Nathan Wolfe, at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, US, who led the study. He says the new results suggest the team's previous find of simian foamy viruses in bushmeat hunters was "not just a fluke". In the blood-screening study, 13 out of 930 people were found to be infected with simian retroviruses, and two with the new human strains. The new findings are no surprise, agrees Martine Peeters at the retrovirus laboratory of the Institute of Research for Development in Montpelier, France. She and her colleagues, along with other groups, had described simian TLV-3 in primates in Cameroon in 2004 so the discovery of a human equivalent is not unexpected. Now scientists will look for the simian equivalent of HTLV-4. HTLV-1 and -2 are not very pathogenic says Peeters, but about 1% of those infected may go on to develop leukaemia. Global distribution Wolfe points out that HTLV-1 and 2 are now global viruses, infecting 22 million worldwide. "This finding is in a class of disease known to have global distribution and known to cause disease. It's not just a few obscure viruses crossing over and staying only in hunters," he told New Scientist. He says the next issue to tackle is whether these new retroviruses reach a "dead end" in hunters, or are capable of human-to-human transmission. While HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 are not a serious threat to global health, Peeters warns that "it shows that there is still retroviral transmission from primates to humans, so maybe one day another SIV could become another HIV". HIV-2 is believed to have jumped from mangabey monkeys and HIV-1 from chimpanzees. A new HIV could potentially jump from another species, she cautions. The work was presented at a retrovirus conference in Boston, US, on Friday. |

How many infected here in the US were infected by eating monkeys?
As compared to same sex partners...sharing needles in illegal drug use..
or to those who practice un safe sex with multiple partners outside of marriage.
You stop the drugs and needles...un safe sex ..and same sex practices..
what would happen to aids?
Maybe the 10 commandment thingy wasnt all that bad?

President Bush AIDS prevention funding does not allow for anything other then preaching Abstinence. They cannot talk about condoms or other ways for people , primarily in Africa, to protect themselves.

Abstinence is the "conservative" answer to pretty much everything except of course excessive spending on military / war efforts.
Want to decrease the spread of aids?
