When you elect someone as President that the rest of the world thinks is just one big wuss: www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/25/us.north.korea.react/index.htmlThis is after the North Koreans agreed in 2007 to halt their programs to develop a nuclear bomb, in exchange for assistance in developing their nuclear energy program. Now, new President in place in the US, and the North Koreans know he's not gonna do nothing. Blank check to once again start up their nukes program and de-stabilize the whole region.

Didn't North Korea conduct their first nuclear test in 2006, when the two "tough guys" Bush & Cheney were in the White House?

I'm not sure. What did Bush do to scare them into never conducting another nuclear test?
My point being that all of his tough guy 'axis of evil' bluster (back in 2002), sure scared the crap out of North Korea.Lol.

It also presumes that the US has complete control over domestic North Korean affairs. It's amusing how much arrogance comes from the US in terms of its ability to 'control' other countries. Perhaps there are more pressing internal reasons for North Korea to continue with their nuclear program?
But I'd hate to get in the way of Obama bashing...especially since it has seven more years to run its course....

Great press conference on the matter, too, btw. NOT!
For all his supposedly great oratory skills, an unprepared Obama is not a good communicator.

A recent article in the WSJ points out that Kim Ill is ill (and may actually be dying). Apparently there is no clear successor, but hard-liners are thought to have the best chance to take control. One of the hard-liners is Kim Ill's (3rd) son. These so-called hard-liners have been pushing their nuclear program forward.
North Korea has been playing this waffling game for years now -- at least back to the Clinton Administration. China could tell the North Korean's to not go there, but it is in there best interests (so far) to have NK be a thorn in the side of the US. The ball is really in Japan's court since they could easily develop nuclear weapons. If they threaten to start up a nuclear weapons program, then the Chinese may order the North Korean's to "get real."

If they threaten to start up a nuclear weapons program, then the Chinese may order the North Korean's to "get real." The Chinese couldn't give a crap about North Korea's nuclear capability or ability to launch short-to-medium range missiles. China has nothing to fear from North Korea militarily, and Kim Jong Ill and his people know better than to mess with China. They know that the Chinese would show much less restraint than the Western world, plus North Korea has never had a beef with China. China's concerns are with the massive influx of North Korean refugees who would flow across the common border between the two countries, if these people become fearful of a nuclear controntation between North Korea and the US/NATO. Pakistan and India have much more aggressive nuke test programs, yet the rest of the world doesn't hear a peep about it.

I knew one of the limbaugh zombies would post this and then try to somehow wriggle out of when the first first nuke was tested. The one good thing about limbaugh zombies is that they are programmed to all think the same way and are completely predictable.

This is going to be very difficult to resolve. The U. S. does not have any real leverage directly with North Korea...This will take more than a photo op....a fancy speech... or good reading from a teleprompter.
What makes this situation so dangerous is that North Korea has no means of revenue other than future sales of nuclear armed missiles.
Iran would probably pay billions for a tested nuclear weapon with a proven delivery system...If Iran gets this type of weapon, you can bet Saudi Arabia and other middle east oil countries will get very nervous and purchase their own weapons from North Korea.
The UN voted to censor North Korea. What a joke. That doesn't solve anything.
If Japan, South Korea and others in the area threaten to immediately start a nuclear weapons program, that will get China's attention...China is the key to shutting down North Korea's behavior as a rogue state.
