This better be some kind of sick joke. If this is actually true, why don't we just write off NCAA Men's Volleyball all together?
How can these teams, none of whom are even ranked in Division III, be given the chance to earn an automatic bid to the big dance, where they will square off against the best teams in DI?
If any DIII team is to stand the slightest chance of actually competing against the best in the nation, it has to be the DIII National Champ. But even this is a stretch.

Farce....but a good one!
Too bad this isn't true...BYU players could play another 5-6 years. Imagine playing against a 34yr old.

This is to let everyone know. As of the start of the 2006-2007 Men's Volleyball season, the CUNYAC or City Universities of New York Athletics Conference will be the only division three conference that will have its champion go to the NCAA D1 championship bracket. Is this the result of expanding the number of teams at the NCAA finals? If so, this IS a joke.

You guys all need to realize it isnt a d1/d2 tournament. It is National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Tournament. With that being said. Any conference that has the required 8 team minmum will get an AQ. Think of it is a 16 seed in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Will a CUNYAC team (8 seed) ever beat a 1 seed (probally a team from the MSPF). Highly unlikely. But this is something that everyone is going to have to deal with because the "National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship" is open to teams from all Divisions and any conference meeting the requirements to get an AQ will be inivted.

clarification I think...
......Any 'NCAA conference (Div 1, 2 or 3)' that has the required 8 team minimum will get an AQ....
The ongoing NCAA Div 3 Championship in the past has been sponsored by Molten/Mizuno?? can't remember which...and not the NCAA.
Remains to be seen if the winning team from this year's Molten tourney will go to the NCAA Tourney........ or if the Molten Tourney will even continue? ....or if the NCAA choses some other procedure to select the AQ.

Thank You Newbury.
That is right. The NCAA Championship is actually OPEN to ALL DIVISIONS. That means that if any confernce meets the minimum requirement (8 sponsored varsity programs) that CONFERENCE is eligible for the AQ, regardless of DIVISION. Also, it is due to the expansion. Our conference director worked real hard for this. DUE TO THE LACK OF THERE BEING A TRUE DIII Championship he faught for us. YES ITS TRUE. I"M ONE OF THE COACHES IN THE CONFERENCE, I SHOULD KNOW. And might I add this has nothing to do with just the schools. It really has to do with the students that will get the opportunity to play. That's really what it should be about. NO, a CUNY school will never beat a MPSF school. No a CUNY school will never beat an upper level DI or II school, now, but with this the plan is to give all those guys who don't get the big scholarships, who would go to a school with just a club program another VARSITY outlet to have a chance at the BIG DANCE. Who wouldn't want that?! I wish it were in effect when I played. We had some of the best unknown teams in the nation, but because we don't schedule big schools due to lack of money no one knew who we were. We can't travel that way. It's not in our school budgets. I don't know about you but if I had that chance I would take it. Yes it doesn't sound fair, but what is fairer, knowing you have a strong team that will never play for a NCAA championship or at least getting the chance to get there to begin with. As they say in the hood, "Don't hate the player, hate the game." so to paraphrase--"don't hate the schools, hate the situation." If you don't think it's fair go to your schools president, tell them what' sgoing on, AND DEMAND THEM TO MAKE YOUR INEXPENSIVEMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM VARSITY. THEN AFTER THAT, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE CONFERENCE SPONSOR THE IT AS A VARSITY SPORT. THEN THINGS WILL BEGIN TO CHANGE!!! Period. What's really going on is that you're all mad that a DIII conference beat your conferences to the punch. NOT FAIR HUH? REMEMBER, the NCAA MEN's VOLLEYBALL Championship Tournament is OPEN TO ALL, DIVISIONS. We all know what needs to be done, CUNY has always found a way to get it done. We were the only division three conference twenty years ago with varsity men's volleyball. Guys like Elvis Rodrigues, know through out the America on the beach volleyball tours, once played in CUNY for Hunter College. He was named by VOLEYBALL MAG As the "KING of Volleyball" in Central, circa 1991. CUNY once had an AQ into the EIVA Championship. HUNTER, YORK, BROOKLYN and CCNY (City College of NY) weren't just battling but beating schools like George Mason, Rutgers and then Queens College. POwerhouses of the east coast. Yes, that was then this is now. But, now still the only DIII conference. Not association, not a LEAGUE, actual conference with a championship, and that champion WILL GO to the NCAA NATIONAL TITLE. Truthfully speaking whether you like the thought or not. Sorry. But those things can change, you can make it happen.

MOLTEN runs the INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP...That winner gets nothing, but that championship. THE EIVA DIII CHAMP, goes to the EIVA quarterfinals. WHere they face off with the bigger schools of course. Yes I agree, JUNIATA should get the knod, that makes sense, but Juniata isn't in a Division III conference. That's the crux of this blog. CUNY IS A CONFERENCE AND HAS MET THE REQUIRED MINIMUM....eiva, you should really look up your eligibility info before you speak also, 4in5 DI/II--straight 4 in DIII NO REDSHIRTS. The 4in5 works for DII only if the student ISN't REGISTERED IN SCHOOL. No one from BYU would EVER get a chance to play at a CUNY. UNLESS THEY WANTED TO. I'm not saying its right guys, I'm just stating a fact. Something that IS happening NEXT SEASON.

Patrick Dietz you are craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy man. If this does happen this is a sad day in men's volleyball. All I keep reading is the CUNY had great players and strong teams......HAD the key word back when terminology of bump, set, and spike where used. Today's teams in that conference would be lucky to bump, set, spike their way out of a wet paper bag.

Good for the CUNY conference. But the fact remains that in teh last few years the no CUNY representative does not finish in the top of the NECVA and currently does not have any schools ranked in the top 15.
The NCAA has the rule in place so it is a loophole. Good luck to all CUNY schools but there not even the best team in NYC. With their track record, maybe a team from the CUNY conference may get actually play a good match.

Rookie of the week The 6-2 middle blocker enjoyed a huge game versus Philadelphia Bible (3/5), coming up with 12 kills, 12 digs, and 12 blocks. He’s averaging 4.43 kills and 2.74 digs on the season.

So, if another conference puts some men's volleyball teams together, can they have an automatic berth into the tournament?

Can't wait to see a CUNY team on ESPNU in May playing in the "Big Dance." What's next? An invite to the Outrigger tournament the following year!? What a riot!
