USC Men's Volleyball Finishes 2006 Season By Being Swept At Pepperdine
Turhan Douglas, USC's men's volleyball head coach the past four seasons, has resigned to pursue interests outside of coaching so he can spend more time with his family, he announced today (April 24).
USC will conduct an immediate search for his replacement.
Douglas, 36, was 30-89 during his tenure. His 2006 Trojan squad was 11-18 overall and finished in ninth place in the 12-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, USC's best overall and conference records since 2001. When he took over in 2003, he inherited a team that had won only 6 matches the previous season.
Before becoming Troy's head coach, Douglas served as a USC assistant for three seasons (2000-02) under head coach Pat Powers. He also was a head coach at the junior college (Pierce JC) and club (Santa Monica Beach Club) levels earlier in his career.
"It's time for a lifestyle change for me," said Douglas, who has four young children with his wife, Cheryl. "I want to be able to spend time with my family and to continue in my real estate projects.
"I appreciate the opportunity USC gave me to coach this team. If I can be known for anything, I'd want it to be that I left the program in better shape than how it was when I took over. I believe I put down a good foundation and I know the Trojans will do very well in the future."
The USC men's volleyball program has won four NCAA titles while finishing second six other times and third once. But the Trojans have not appeared in the MPSF post-season tourney since 2001 and have not advanced to the NCAA Final Four since 1991.
