I'll have to go with Winder on this one. I saw him play for the 1st time last weekend and I can tell you his skill level jumped quite a bit from last year-- particularly in his location. All of this, coming off of an early season injury. Yeah, it helps to have a cannon like Carroll but Winder was very deceptive in his distribution of sets, he blocks/touches balls off of attacks and becomes an extremely effective attacker standing at 6'8" or 6'9" (I know there has been discussion on this-- all I know is that he is one of many trees on PEP). He even dug almost as many balls as Carroll and Sutherland with great control. Winder creates one-on-one or one-on-none opportunities for his OHs because he mixes it up well. If he had a weakness I would say his serve, but even then it was a pretty tough jump-float.

Rob, you didn't see Winder bust out his topspin jumper? (against UCI). He used it in the early going, then went the float route when the going got tight. His spinner was pretty nasty...when he gets that perfected it'll be another weapon for Pepp.

So winder just received POY for the MPSF. Does that mean he is a lock for POY overall?

He get's my vote even though it counts for nothing.
There is a very good reason Carroll (and PEP) is having a great season. Winder does some amazing things for this years PEP squad.

Cala is not close to being the best. Highest jumper, yes; best hitter, maybe; best volleyball player no way. Volleyball happens to involve more than just jumping high and hitting well. Maybe if BYU would learn this they would number one. Cala is an unorganized blocker and not a good passer. He obviosuly is not a good teammate or he might get more sets. I doubt being a good "teammate" dictates the number of sets he gets. The fact that they have 4 guys that can put the ball away anytime (Cala, Perez, Stowell, Holmes) and a setter that knows this would make more sense. I don't have their hitting %'s in front of me but I believe all of their starters are hitting over .300. Teams can't focus their attention on one hitter and that can't be overlooked.

Winder's an excellent "setter-package!"

I think that it is widely known that BYU has a bunch of ego's that hinder their success. Just look at the facts. Pepperdine only has two players on either the 1st, 2ND OR 3RD ALL mpsf TEAMS (Given that those players are argueably both MVPS). BYU has 6 or 7. BYU has the best team player for player in the country however they do not live up to potential. Cala is an example of this deflated potential. The most gifted player, hindered by an ego and lack of heart.
