It was one half of one rotation, for the cost of 2 subs. While Destiny serves, we don't want to let them run the outside, so we will put Haneef in. You get 6 subs total so burning 2 subs on one half of one rotation is a big committment. Using 4 of your 6 subs on one half of one rotation is silly, especially if it ends up being a missed serve. And Tom needs to come back in on the sideout because we need her to pass.
Destiny hit awfully well out of the back row today. I don't know if it matters who was setting her.

I ask again. Did anyone count subs? Maybe we were down to 1.

Yes, I know it was only for one half of a rotation and yours is the most reasonable explanation of Hugh's thinking. But still, unless you're worried about an injury, there's no real reason to be saving any subs at that point the game.

I ask again. Did anyone count subs? Maybe we were down to 1. I only watched 1/2 of the game and saw Haneef and Miyashira sub in, so maybe there was another sub earlier that I missed which would explain it or maybe Hugh did want to have one left in the bag.

I ask again. Did anyone count subs? Maybe we were down to 1. USA still had all 6 subs when Haneef went in for Berg in the 4th. Second sub used to put Berg back in. Third sub was Tama in for Harmotto. Not having a setter on the floor during USA's serve isn't unusual. Hugh has used the single blocking sub during the Grand Prix matches and in the match vs Bulgaria.

And that's what he's trying to do. Score on the block.

Surprised no one has mentioned the double sub in Set 3. If I remember correctly it was a particularly ineffective and detrimental sub.
21 All. The usual double sub with Thompson/Haneef-Park for Berg/Hooker.
Fabiana kill off Thompson serve. 22-21 Brazil.
First Thompson set goes to Haneef-Park. Roofed. 23-21 Brazil with momentum. Berg/Hooker back into rotation.

Everyone but Sheila and Jacqueline were effective hitting for Brazil...too bad for Brazil those players weren't set more
I think they are missing Mari more than Fabiola.

Thanks to work I missed the entire match. Did Hodge get in this time?

Did Hodge get in this time? Tom and Larson both had really good matches. If they play like that the whole time, Hodge will never see the floor unless Hugh tries to work her in just so everybody can say they played.

Thompson comes in for Hooker. So two possibilities: 1) he prefers Hooker's serve and/or 2) he wants to keep Hooker in for the back row attack (although less likely with no setter). Regardless, the whole idea is to score a point. He's making the sub he feels most likely to score that point. And, no. Thompson can sub for someone else in a different game. But he's not going to do that. He's going to stick with the strategies they've been using. Sub rule is six subs, one re-entry allowed. I understand leaving Hooker in for all the reasons you cited, but I don't see any reason not to put Thomspon in for Tom in that scenario. You're not saving Thompson for anything. Her defense will be as good (probably better) than Tom's and she can set in transition. Am I missing something? Hugh has used this type of sub (THP in for Berg, CT or AG not coming in) in previous tournaments and Tom has usually set in these scenarios. The other reason I could see him leaving Tom in is if she digs, then Davis probably sets, or a middle (Harmotto in today's match) sets if it's a tight dig, and they then have 4 choices, instead of 3 - DH, Tom, Larson, or THP. With 6'7" THP on the left, a tip or touch leading to a dig by the line digger would probably create this situation. And Tom would definitely try to set DH on the pipe at times. And I would say that Tom has done a very good job when she has set in this situation.

I think you have to play to get a medal.
I watched a replay, which is a real sketchy deal for me. Evidently NBC has to forget to isolate it or something. Harmotto didn't seem that involved, although she made some great plays and probably hit well over .500; just didn't get set much. USA got outblocked 7-4, although clearly Brazil was tipping a lot and consciously hitting around the block. US block has eaten up China recently; should be a good chance for Harmotto to assert herself. If not, wouldn't be surprised to see Scott, although I repeat Harmotto seemed to play well, just not gotten that involved.

I think Harmotto played really well -- especially in the first two sets. It's understandable we don't set middle too often -- when you have Tom, Larson and Hooker on the outside and hitting out of the back row our middles won't be called on as often. So they block, serve and play some D. Both yesterday and today Harmotto played well in the back row during the half rotation she was serving. She did have a foot-fault today, but it happens. I thought both her and Foulke did a nice job in their roles. To be honest, I think the younger players have been the "stars" so far. But all in all it's a nice mix of veterans and rookies. Loads of talent all around.

I just finished watching it "live" on NBC. Seems like they still have a different definition of live for people on the West Coast than for people in other time zones. It was "live", three hours before...
