Caldwell and Ammerman are too slow. Thornton needs to hit the weightroom and get serious if he wants the job fulltime. Shoji has the talent, will he show the leadership needed and can the rest of the squad rally around him?

He's not only good at setting the ball, but also is the best server compared to Brian Thornton and all the others. He led his team in Germany to two championships in a row. Not to mention that he was the starter setter of the team during one of the best match series of the European Champions League against Zenit Kazan (David Lee, Matthew Anderson). He is the perfect one, IMPO.

I would not count Caldwell out. I watched a couple of his Champions League games and he was nothing short of phenomenal (and certainly not slow). I think it will be interesting to see who emerges from this group, but I am sure Speraw will give them all a chance to prove themselves.

So is this thread about the tournament, or about the USA team in the tournament? Just wondering if I should start another one for non-USA discussions. I'm interested in the American team, but probably not as interested as you all

I'm interested in the American team, but probably not as interested as you all It's about both. We take the time to have some discussion about the team while the tournament hasn't started. But let's talk about the tournament a bit. Did you like the new format of the tournament?. I admit that hated it!. Two pools filled up with strong teams and another with weak teams does not sound good indeed!. I think the FIVB should start anew. How about creating two simultaneous editions of WL?. We could have a World League - A and World League - B. The WL-A would be comprised only with the 12 strongest teams in the world and the top team of the WL-B would be the teams supposed to replace the bottom team of the WL-A in the next edition. It could work out. What do you guys think?. Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/49312/page/3/world-league-2013#ixzz2SnQtloJo

From my perspective as a spectator, that was a LOT better than watching two teams go at it on back to back nights.... Just my $.02.

Does anyone have a link (to video) to Caldwell or Ammerman playing with their pro teams this year?

hi im living on Portugal but im fan of USA team, in fact i have been following all US tournmts since 2008. This year im following closely all US player that are playing in Europe. Ranking: 1st-HOLT (superb) 2nd-ANDERSON 3rd-SMITH, HOLMES, TROY. And, guys, believe me, LOTMAN is not in first 10, he is a Polish Champ only because Rezow has guys like Bartman or Novakoski. And PATAK, promised a lot but he was a disapointment to me (i was his fan)...real power, but very slow, so many times outblocked. I hope he can change this. One final word to Speraw, he did what Knipe should have done,US lost to Italy because of receive, and please one guy emerged: LAMBOURNE (very very bad, thts why he lost the pro contract here in Europe). Unless Speraw has a justification i dont understand SANDER absence.

Anderson is clearly #1.....he has dramatically improved and has adapted to the international game just as quickly as he did the college game. As good as Holt is (and a teammate of Anderson at PSU!!) his impact on the team's success takes a backseat to Anderson. I'm excited for the new crew.....can't wait to see what Shoji has to offer. As for OH2??? That is a toss up. I am in agreement with a lot of people here that Lambourne has to hang it up.....time to develop the next Libero.

Kinda funny how everything comes full circle. Lambourne had to wait forever and a day for the incumbent libero before him to retire, even though many felt Lambourne was better at the time. Now, it is Lambourne holding on too long as the veteran, and keeping the younger guys from progressing. Reft has been waiting a long time, and now even if Lambourne hangs it up, has to contend with younger talent like Baby Shoji all vying for one spot.
Maybe it's a function of the fact that you can play until you're older than dirt as a libero, since you have no real requirement to jump high and bang hard. Heck, Karch Kiraly could probably get himself back into playing shape and compete for the position if he could pass and defend anything like he did in his prime back in the 80's.

Did Sander want to play in World League this season? I thought he's been pretty banged up during the college season. I would figure a rest was in order.
