I don't get it how Russia can be so successful. IMPO, Russia has one of the ugliest volleyball styles in the world. Players are so slow and mechanical. They mostly rely only on their height and strenght. Just that.

Those chippy line calls in the 4th set of the Bulgaria/Argentina match really leave a sour taste in my mouth. Why do we not have neutral-nation line judges? Travel costs? Bah. Bring them on the same plane as the R1 and R2 if it's that important. I've on rare occasions seen the R1 and R2 be compatriots, so I don't think there's any issue there. But we've got to have neutral line judges. And it's not even about conscious, conspicuous 'home cooking,' at least not entirely. If you're working a match with a team you (quite naturally and understandably) favour, you're bound to see the split-second in/out calls going the way you as a 'fan' want them to. I wonder, are there any rules in the NCAA against officials working matches involving schools they attended? I know in Major League Baseball, there's an umpire who has a brother that pitches. That umpire isn't allowed to work any games involving his brother's team. I really don't think they think he'd just purposely kick every call to benefit his brother's team, it's just that him working those games would make it very difficult for him to be impartial. Hell, it's the same reason surgeons don't operate on family members. I guess it just makes too much sense to implement :\ But there will apparently be a replay challenge system in place starting tomorrow (technical issues with it tonight). The cost is prohibitive. Flying two referees in from halfway around the world for a match or weekend double-header is one thing. Flying in 5 more personnel (4 working line judges plus a reserve) doesn't make sense. The scorers are from the host country as well - might as well fly two of them in two while you're at it. This is also part of the reason that the R1 enjoys god-like status - anything that is clearly wrong can be overruled. Obviously the really really close ones will be more difficult for them to form an opinion on, and it's a shame that members of the line judge corps (who are presumably local referees themselves) would be subjected to bias, but I guess that's human nature, and the problem is worse in some countries than in others. Some NCAA conferences prohibit referees from working a match involving a school they attended, others prohibit referees from working matches with their alma mater, and others (usually smaller or geographically limited ones) have no restrictions. Line judges are often affiliated with the institution - work study student, alum, friend of the coach, or just the "State U" line judges that work 75% of that team's matches. The replay system is really nice - takes a lot of the doubt out of disputed calls. Sometimes makes the end of a set look like the final minute of a college basketball game though. :/

I don't get it how Russia can be so successful. IMPO, Russia has one of the ugliest volleyball styles in the world. Players are so slow and mechanical. They mostly rely only on their height and strenght. Just that. Hmm. The female team, maybe but the male team, not really. They are tall but not slow. Paul Sunderland said yesterday Russia used to be predictable but not anymore. Alekno changed their style of play a little bit to play smarter (drop shots, etc). And did you see the height of the new players, the 3 OH's are only 6'5" including the opposite Pavlov. So they didnt 'rely' on their height to defeat Brazil yesterday. But yeah, you could say the previous Russian team relied on their height and strength.

You can't even say that about the Russian womens team. These aren't your father's Russian volleyball teams!

This BS keeps getting repeated, and it is simply not true. Caldwell has been setting since his high school days. While he played some Opposite at UCLA, he was always primarily a setter. He had about 1 assist per set as a junior. A little more as a sophomore than I was aware of. Thanks for being a complete dick in pointing it out, though. Awesome that you are so self-righteous in many threads, but you feel it's okay call someone who actually watched the player in high school a derogatory name. Given that you didn't watch the UCLA matches, it makes sense that you have no clue about his assists. He would often split time with Kevin Ker, playing the front row to improve blocking and add the dump into the offensive arsenal while Kevin played through the backrow. That's the way Scates used his two setters. So yeah, Caldwell was on the court as a setter for more than just his senior year. At least know your facts before calling someone a dick, if you feel it's necessary to refer to people in such a way.

So, Canada just beat Russia in 5. If they managed to take it to 5 against Brazil and lost then all three teams would be at 3 points. What happens then?

Head-to-head wins and losses and would be tied, as would sets. So it would go to total points, I believe.

Please grow up a little. All you ever do is stir the pot and talk crap about people. I may ruffle a few feathers from time to time, but I say my peace and move on. You seem to lack the ability to just let things go. You're the only one here who's had a persistent problem with me. So b'bye. I really detest blocking people, but when they only provide aggravation there's no reason not to. Hey, bonus for you -- I'll never chide you for saying "PSUIVA" ever again. So go be a disrespectful jerk in peace.

Someone from Inside-Volley calculated the points ratio and Russia is in semis no matter what happens with Brazil and Canada!

That doesn't seem like it should be, but it's all so damn complicated I'd prefer not to even think about it. It's more simple if either side can win tomorrow's match in under 5 sets. If so, then that's the team who will go forward (with Russia). Of course Canada winning in 5 will obviously favour them directly (since they'd have two wins in that case).

Hm. Well I've heard that LAOLAtv do archive some of their webcasts, but do these links ever even work in the US? I usually have to go to...eh, different means...when hunting for a stream.
