it makes me sick to my stomach that the us could still be in the hunt and we could have been excited for team usa had it not been for some stupid setter experiment. I have a feeling the experiment is only beginning.

Spiridonov given a match penalty late in set 4. About time. Anyone know if this has bearing on their finals appearance? I know in soccer when someone gets a match penalty, they're out for the next match, too, as well as the match where the penalty happens.

This was the first time I'd ever seen it, and ordinarily I wouldn't be in favour of it being assessed just for being a jackass, but Spiridonov earned it. What a cocky little punk. He's got gobs of talent, but he needs to learn how to act like he's been there before. Maybe this will reach him...but I doubt it. I feel like there may have been a scoring error in this set, though. There should have been an automatic point for Italy on the red card that preceded the yellow/red combo, and I don't think it was actually given. It wouldn't have likely made a difference, though.

There were two red cards? The second one being a yellow/red combo?

Mhm. A red card is an automatic point (and sideout, if applicable) for the opposition, while yellow/red together is the DQ. I /thought/ a red card was also a DQ for the set, but Spiridonov got a red yesterday and stayed in (and he wasn't immediately subbed out for the red today, either), so I'm not sure about that. I do know that if Russia had already used all their subs when Spiridonov got yellow and red, they would have automatically lost the set.
Just like substitution and libero rules, it's different in the NCAA (while appearing similar enough to breed false familiarity). Under NCAA rules, there's a distinction between yellow and red held in the same hand and yellow and red held in different hands. I can't exactly remember what that distinction is anymore (maybe one is set DQ, the other is match DQ), because when is this ever gonna be something you need to know? Most people behave themselves better than Spiridonov.

Spiradinov was not disqualified (out for the match), he was expelled (out for the rest of the set). There is no soccer style carry over from one match to the next. This is clearly spelled out in the rules, which are freely available for download in 4 languages. www.fivb.org/EN/Refereeing-Rules/RulesOfTheGame_VB.asp

Am I imagining this or are yellow cards now a point too?

Check out Spiridonov trash talking his current setter Grankin!
Another red card.

Doesn't really reflect well on either of them.
