Wurst is 53 years old, doesn't train any more, and at this very second is better than some of the active players on the list. With the right partner he could make money right now. Yup, you guys are missing quite a few east coast legends! Kenny Haan and Mike Ryan( def). The great Ernie Brasch from Florida. Ric Lucas..hey don't forget those Hughes bros.! They had some great finishes on the Molson tour and AVP tour in the 1980's finishing 7th place in avp Chicago defeating the great dan Vrebolovich and Tim Walmer. 4 other 9th place avp finishes, Winning several Neptune festivals and ranked #34th in 1987 rankings after the world Championships. ahead of guys like Steve Timmons,Dusty Dvorak and other west coast legends. Ed Winchester who was head referee at most avp tourny's and Steve Vrebolovich will consider Those Hughes boys the tops..because they defeated more west coast teams. But for the record.. The Hall Bros. vs. the Hughes bros. were some epic battles, and they should def. be on that top 10 list. let's not forget The great Manny Agnant, Greg Hatch, and a few other florida legends! The great Rick Wood from Bethany Beach, DE was a local legend and often played with both Richmond and Frank Hall. then there are the legendary transplants. Chris Warshaw who lived on the east coast for some years and who continues to play in CA now. And the great Tim Spees who won west coast tournaments with guys like Dane Selnick. He has spent the last 25 years in the Virginia area, but also played in east coast tournaments. I'm sure I am missing some more, but thanks for the east Coast beach vb thread. Go to east coast legends on FACEBOOK and OLD SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL on Facebook. Excellent conversations with guys like Sinjin, Stokie, Pat Powers and others chiming in:) Thanks guys. If I may be permitted to out a member of many of our lists here, welcome to the topic Mr. Hughes. Since you may be the best person to ask, something I have always wondered, only having seen Carter play at the very end of his playing days, is what was the best combination of Halls, and which one was the best in your opinion. Also if you had to list the best players on the old Molson tour who would they be and in which order?

Mark Child and John Heese to name a few of the East Coast Canadian contingent. Several of them were very, very good & played in many US East Coast events. A bronze medal and an FIVB win, not too shabby.

I don't see anyone mentioning Ken Engels. Played with Manny Agnant for years. Manny's favorite partner, including Daniel C. FOR SURE one of the top players in East Coast history.

Art Couvoulian the author of the Sands of Time and the book of TEAMS, has put extensive work into this new 400 page book on most notable teams, according to era.1- Phil/ Lucena 2- The Hughes Bros. As they were playing consistently on the AVP your from 1982-87. Taking many 13ths, 9 that and 7th in Chicago knocking off legendary Steve Vrebolovitch / Walker and taking Larry meats. They lost 15-13 vs HOV/ OB..in Wildwood. If the Halls had played more AVP, they would have been ranked higher. Clark the high profile ref and Sinjin Smith have agreed that The Hughes Bros were the best east coast team playing on the tour and right behind Phil and Nick.

Check the book of TEAMS by Art Couvoulian. He wrote the Sands of Time. He has done his research of notable teams according to era. The team of John and Willie Hughes is ranked behind Phil and Nick because of the longevity of tournaments they played on the AVP your in the 1980s. Finishing 13ths..9ths.. and 7th in Chicago taking down Vrebolovitch and Walmer. The Halls had they played more would have ranked behind Phil and Nick. Sinjin and Clark the AVP ref always thought that the Hughes boys were the best East Coast team on the tour

I thought on this for a while, maybe too long. I started playing in volleyball tournaments in 1987 (15 yrs old), in the Clearwater/St. Pete area. I don't remember everything from the early days, and teams were for sure more local. Don Worley (SP), in Sarasota had the best tournaments because he drew both the East Coasters and West Coasters of Florida. Also paid decent, and actually did the 1st ranking system for all divisions. I think I only saw 1 or 2 Molson tournaments and the Halls were the only Non-Florida team I remember. So, while this thread is East Coast, my early teams are based on what they did in Florida. The Greatest TEAM in Florida Beach volleyball history is Mike Ryan and Kenny Haan, Period. The dominated the 80s in Florida. Followed closely by Chuck Coulter and Erine Brasch - articles.sun-sentinel.com/1985-07-30/news/8501310550_1_volleyball-lake-aspectI also have to mention Mike Barszcz,in the late 80s, beginning of the 90s he was the best player playing IMO. He was a bit shorter version of John Hyden I'd say. I missed the mid 90s in Florida because I was in the ARMY. When I got out and back to FL, it was 95. You had players like Tony Cothron & Burke Stefko plus Cali/Hi imports Chris Hannemann, Mark Paaluhi and James Fellows(still the nastiest Jump serve I've ever seen) Oh, and some kid from Ft. Lauderdale was winning opens, George Roumain.. Really, after Molson and not until the dig the Beach (old Bud light), Toyota and East End there wasn't a lot of mixing the East Coast and Florida. So, here is my top 10 based on East Coast & AVP performances. 1. Phil 2. Nick 3. Hall Brothers 4. George Roumain 5. Henry russell 6. Mike Ryan & Ken Haan 6. Burke Stefko 7. Grotowski 8. Adam Roberts 9. Mike DiPerro 10. Adrian Just Missed...Chad Turner Missing the Cut were Dana, BJ & Gaston the 3 Van Zwieten Bros. (Ranked Mark, Jim, Steve IMO) Tony Cothron (didn't play enough AVPs in his prime) others Jake Elliott, Ihor, Jim Walls, Matt Henderson, Mike Folestein,Ranse Jones, Ron Jenkins Jay Mears, Mike Morales, John Yancy & Greg White. Women (Florida List, not that qualified): 1. Tyra (1 AVP win) 2. Nancy Cothron (1 P&R win and an AVP 2nd) 3. Brooke Sweat (will jump with an AVP win) 4. Franci Van Zwieten 5. Toni Weston 6. Lynda Street 7. Kim Whitney 8. Tara Kuk 9. Chara Harris 10.Barb Bierman Not sure where Gabrielle Reece falls...whatever.

John and Willie Hughes were sponsored and played in many Molson tour tournaments as well as Seagrams and regularly played the Florida beaches AVP. From 1982-87 finishing many 13ths, 9ths and a 7 th place against Vrebolovitch and Walmer. Regarded as the best East Coast team on the AVP Tour by referee Bobby Clark and Sinjin Smith.Art Couvoulian the author of Notable TEAMS..according to era lists Hughes Bros right behind Big Phil And Nick. Noting... had the Hall Bros. Played more tournaments would have taken their slot on the best.
Mark Christianson was often in the Molsosns and teamed up with Chris Hanneman. Bunky Dukes should be on this list, as he won tournaments with various partners. Criteria, would be tournaments played and places. On the 1987 world ranking..the Hughes brothers were ranked 33rd. The first east coast team behind California teams..even in front of Pat Powers and everyone else on their lists..only because they consistently played on the AVP Tour from 1982-87

Interesting to bring this back, and look back at the opinions from years ago.
Ryan Doherty the biggest name that cannot get left off the list now. He was among the top big guys for too many years. If Phil/Gibb had retired years ago, he may have been an Olympian if scooped up by one of the top defenders.
Zaun would have to be heavily considered.
Adrian would have to have a major bump, he's beaten great teams that others on the list would not touch internationally. It is probably time to give him his due.
The fact that Robert's career is just sooo long, and what he has done for so many athletes, you've got to continue to give him props.

How is Brooke not #1? She’s an Olympian, and played in a era against Kerri and April which are the top 3 all time American women’s players, you take them out and Brooke has more wins. Go look at her 2014 season on avp, she lost to Kerri in like 4-5 finals and a few thirds she got she lost to Kerri in the semis. She has a ton of. Seconds as well.
