Did Carlson just get thrown into a comparison with Hooker and Lowe? Well, I said "arguably" relative to Carlson, but not to Hooker and Lowe. My only point was that an OPP can be a go-to player. That'll most likely be Jones this coming season. I see your point, which isn't really altered by this clarification, but Hooker only played left at Texas, sometimes for 3 rotations sometimes for 6. She never played right or aligned opposite the setter(s).

Jones is very athletic and could possibly end up on the left side (with Schwan at OPP).

Lauren Sanders of WVBA verballed to the Dawgs. We got a middle for 2017 Nice by Cook to keep her home. High ceiling, she's huge and is a solid natural blocker.

I looked on WVBA and apparently she's a 6'5 middle on the 18s team. I haven't watched her but she seems like a great get. Nice job by recruiting as Washington will need some strong middles after 2015

she's coming a year too late. We need at least one more middle for the 2016 class. would be great to potentially get a walk on this upcoming year and redshirt her

I think this upcoming year has tons of promise. Washington needs to work first and foremost on passing passing passing. Nobody on the team is going to replicate Vansant's numbers. I don't care how good Scrambray was as a frosh (she tapered off in the second half of the season), or how high on Jones redbeard maybe (it's a little annoying), NOBDOY IS GOING TO REPLICATE VANSANT'S NUMBER THIS YEAR. But that's ok, because if the team passes, they won't need to replicate Vansant in order to still be very very good. The bread and butter of the UW 6-2 era is still intact this year which is strong serving and strong blocking. That alone will win us many points. Our passing didn't always need to be sharp in years past because we've had Vansant. Well now she's gone. thankfully we have competent OH's (though nowhere near the level of Vansant, and to a lesser extent Nelson) and a middle blocking tandem that is bested by only 1 or 2 teams in the country. If we can create offensive opportunities with our backcourt play, I think this UW team can do good things this year. That means that Strickland and Scambray in particular need to put in a lot of hard work back there, both in passing and defense. That will make or break our season, IMO. Strickland improved greatly on the year. I'm still scratching my head at how she could be one of the worst libero in the conference for the first half of the season (stop being in denial husky fans, it's true), to libero of the year, but I digress. If she can continue to make gigantic leaps back there, and Scambray as well, this will be a very dynamic team and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do. THANKFULLY they are coming down to the bay area for both matches, so I'll get to see them in person.
Go Dawgs

Could it be Scambray's weird sway-back hitting motion, telegraphing where she was hitting and contacting the ball at a lower-point, that caused her to taper off, once opponents got a look at her on tape? Hopefully, Keegan is making fixing Scambray's arm-swing project #1. Since I haven't actually seen her play OH yet, it's not really a matter of being "high on" Jones in that regard. I'm perfectly fine with her playing at OPP, although I do think that having your best attacker, if that is what she turns out to be, at OH is somewhat of a no-brainer. Switching her to MB, however, no, no, no... Show me where I've ever said that anyone is going to replicate Vansant. What I have said is that switching to a 5-1 would lessen the need to replicate Nelson, since we'd be playing one OPP, rather than two. Otherwise, you'd be plugging in DeHoog for Nelson (unless you put Schwan at the other OPP and Julye at OH). So, any more false controversies you want to throw at me? Anything to keep this thread on the first page during the summer doldrums...

Would be great to get some inside info on Beals and her recovery.
I'm not convinced it would be a disaster if she's not ready to play in September or not at 100%.

Well, Tanner was virtually tweeting monthly updates following her foot surgery, including pics of her boot. I don't think Beals even uses Twitter. We'll probably have to wait until the first practice to see if she's running and jumping.

Not sure why I'm even explaining this, my words were crystal clear. I didn't say 'redbeard thinks Jones will replace Vansant', I said you were high on jones. It was my opinion that no matter what the upside is for players that nobody was going to replace vansants production. I wasn't throwing anything on you. The only time I mentioned you was about was about a topic that is true, do you disagree? Btw, you know I love all my UW volleytalkers, I really don't want to argue over some misunderstanding.

Well, you did include ALL three in the same sentence: "I don't care how good Scrambray was as a frosh (she tapered off in the second half of the season), or how high on Jones redbeard maybe (it's a little annoying), NOBDOY IS GOING TO REPLICATE VANSANT'S NUMBER THIS YEAR." If you hadn't thrown my moniker in there (AND called me "annoying"!), I might not have said anything. Other than that, I pretty much agreed with everything else you posted (including that Vansant can't be replicated)... Ah, come on, with that kind of attitude, this thread will rapidly sink to Page 2.

So, just to update:
2015: OH: Destiny Julye 5'11"? CA (signed)
L/DS: Courtney Domme 5'6" CO (signed) (hanging it up after two knee surgeries)
2016: OH: Kara Bajema 6'1"? WA MB: Avalyn Niece 6'0"? WA L/DS: Shayne McPherson 5'7" WA L/DS: Cailin Onosko 5'6" CA
2017: MB: Lauren Sanders 6'4"? WA
2017 Roster:
OH: Schwan/Jones, Scambray, Julye, Bajema OPP: Jones/Schwan, DeHoog, Tanner? MB: Niece, Sanders, Bajema? S: Tanner, Finau L: Domme, McPherson, Onosko
That's 12, so at least one will be a walkon. If we get an MB transfer, that'll be one two (McPherson or and Onosko?).

Does anyone have ideas about what positions (and who?) Cook et al is pursuing for 2018? 6 scolies available... Graduating 2017: OH: Scambray, Schwan; OPP: Jones, DeHoog; S: Tanner, Finau. That's a ways off, however...

Wow maybe a really good recruiting year for Washington if they can establish themselves in the recruiting wars/ if they can get some really great players(don't know how well they will perform and how it will affect the recruiting)
