Forgive me for stepping in after being absent for so long, but if my daughter was absolutely SERIOUS about Volleyball, i'd have her SERIOUSLY consider Long Beach State... It's a well known fact that LBSU spits out all-americans, legends, and Olympic Team members - some of whom were NOT THAT GREAT when they first started... Which points to DEVELOPMENT...
Kerri Nishimoto certainly was not an all-american coming into the beach... In fact, she wasn't even a setter... Ended up setting an undefeated regular season in 2001... that is DEVELOPMENT from average if not marginal talent... Not many coaching staffs can boast that... same can be said about setters in the past...
Mariko Crum had a very similar decision if you catch my drift... A certain school with a retarded piece of greenery for a mascot was in the mix in her recruitment as well...
And FURTHERMORE, what makes you think LBSU glory is in the past? We're in RELOADING MODE smart a**...
Not to mention basically our WHOLE STARTING LINE UP is getting surgery right now... In fact, I saw them at a basketball game last night... Natalie Uhart was on crutches, Erika Chidester was on some a few nights ago as well... And others too... Last season was FULL OF INJURIES... Enough said...
And you forgot to mention ALEXIS CRIMES, a FUTURE STAR who is coming in next year... And the talent on the current roster that will soon be playing...
So PULLLLEASE spare us your complexed statements of how LBSU glory is in the past! 2001 WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO BUDDY!
And 2004 is here...
AND FINALLY, YOUR STATEMENT ABOUT THE BEACH AFTER BRIAN LEAVES is totally reflective of your COMPLEX! Only an opposing fan that is ANGRY at the success of a legendary program like ours can say something like that...
Because the same will probably happen if Dunning leaves Stanford, if Bandachowski leaves UCLA, etc... Same deal buddy...
BUT THERE'S ONE THING YOU FORGOT TO MENTION... When Brian leaves, THERE'S DEBBIE GREEN VARGAS TO TAKE OVER!!! And believe you me, she'll do JUST AS WELL!
GO BEACH!!!

By the way, when is LBSU going to make the former Women of Troy great volleyball star setter and a member of the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, Debbie Green Vargas, an Associate Head Coach? She has put 18 years as an assistant coach to Brian G., and given by SDB's assertion above, she is more than deserving to be promoted.

All of your beach bashers who post on this little website just kill me! You are sooooo afraid of Long Beach and you are soooo jealous of the success of the program and of it's former players and it coaches.....You are pathetic, and I hope you enjoy your opportunity to "bash while you can" because what goes around comes around and we are very confident at LBS that we will be back with a vengeance, as they say! So enjoy your petty little poison proliferation while you can Where exactly did you see anyone bashing LBSU in this thread? The only comments I saw that were in a school bashing mode came from you.

Somehow I imagine that if she weren't happy with her situation at LBSU she would have left before she'd been there for all of those 18 years.

First that school with the piece of green for a mascot was not a serious player for Crum. Another school in Northern California was and that's UOP. Second, Long Beach is a legendary program only because it has a legendary coach. The "big dogs" like Stanford, UCLA, Hawaii, USC will survive and continue to thrive after a coaching change. The only reason LBSU continues to get good players is the presence of that legendary coach. You honestly believe top players will continue to flow into LBSU once Brian leaves? For what reason? Stop trying to compete and compare LBSU with the big name schools. It just does'nt work anymore.

Immature or not, my opinion about LBSU is not about bashing their vb program. I think nobody is disputing what they have done or where they are going. I think that families considering a vb program look at more than just the vb program. The community, location, academic reputation, the campus, and even weather play a role in any decision. Just as someone might pick Notre Dame over Indiana University, many, I think, might pick Stanford because of the over-all reputation in many areas, not just vb. We don't know what Barboza is looking for in a college, but there's a lot to consider.

You complaining about other people bashing the beach is about the funniest thing ever. All you ever post about is how this or that school isn't good and that girl is stupid if she doesn't go to the Beach. If she went to the beach, she'd be an AA or on the national team or she'd be way better than she could ever be at any other school. You put down every other program, cause the Beach is the best best best at everything and if you don't go there, you suck. Give it up. Shall we even get into your constant bashing of USC and UCSB? If anyone is jealous, it's you, cause those teams have passed the Beach by. BTW, no one is bashing the Beach on this thread. Maybe they are bashing some of their rather less than intelligent fans, but not the Beach itself.

Ya know, I admire and respect the LBSU vb program and what they've managed to string together for the past 25+ years. But...
Let's be real. Each team has, annually, approximately 12 players (it's actually anywhere from 9-20, but let's just call it an even 12). From my extensive and deep vb knowledge, not to mention the vb "facts" I make up now and then, no program has had all 12 players from a given class make All-Conference or All-American, much less the National Team. At Long Beach State, there's Tara, Danielle, Haneef, and Misty (on the beach). That leaves, oh let me count...1, 2, 3, ...about 312 players who never made it professionally or on the national team or All-American despite having ties to The Beach. The same can be said for all other schools.
Yeah, sure you can say if you attend The Beach, you are "more likely" to be an All-American or OTC material than if you attended other schools, but the fact of the matter is, you've got to be All-World types with All-World potential like Tara, Danielle, and Misty. And even if you are, you still might not make it up that Toshi mountain (Weaver, Dillard, White).
Is it the program or the player? I don't think BG, as good as he is, can take credit for Misty, Tara, and Danielle, just as I don't think Hawaii was responsible for Kim Willoughby. Kim would've been great no matter which school she attended. Some players just sparkle all on their own athleticism, and of course, coaches and programs take credit for their brilliance.
This is not to discount The Beach. You could argue that The Beach is more likely to get you to The Promised Land than if you attended Ball State (sorry, Kevin), but I don't think you can make the same argument of Stanford vs. The Beach, or Hawaii vs. The Beach.

Hey Wolfy, you might want to go the the USA VB site and take a look at that roster there, count em babe, count em That number of 5 could drop to 2-3 by the time the Olympics rolls around though BM. Elisha and Britt didn't make the world cup roster, will they make the Olympic team? Will Tara retire from active playing and go into the Olympics as a coach instead? Frankly, Mike Hebert has done pretty well in getting player that have come into the Minnesota program shots on the national team and the national training team. Especially considering the players he's had in the program haven't come into the program with nearly the national recognition of some of those you're giving credit to BG for training to that level. Lindsey Berg, Nicole Branagh both have spent time with the national team. Stephanie Hagen and Charnette Fair both spent time with the training team. Cassie Busse could probably get a shot at the national team if that's a direction she decides she wants to take after the Olympics. Plus, the "story" of her transition is very much on a par of that of Tayyiba regarding where they both were as players coming into their respective programs and where they were in their senior seasons.

Just wonderin about the numbers that your thinking of based on All Americans coming from LBSU. The BEach has only had 29 All-Americans and Nebraska holds the Cup with 47. And that school witht he silly little greenry as their mascot has had 44. Just another number for Beachman to use to support his "more likely to be an all-american if they attended the Beach" theory.
