Having been associated with Collegiate Sand/Beach Volleyball from its' inception, and having worked all 4 AVCA Collegiate National Championships, it would be an absolute travesty if they do away with the Pairs portion of the competition. Virtually all other collegiate "team" sports that have an individual component to them. Tennis, Golf, Track and Field come to mind immediately to name a few and while hosting a "Team" championship is the focal point for NCAA, they also award the individual players that excel at their respective sport as well. As we can see, not only from this year, but all years of the AVCA National Championships, the individual "Pairs" competition provides a compelling and necessary component to the participation and ultimate drama of sport that Collegiate Volleyball embodies. We all know that if there is no pairs competition, there is no longer a chance for emerging squads, much less smaller squads to even get a "sniff" at reach the Finals for the given year. Every year there are squads from the likes of LMU, Grand Canyon, St. Mary's, UCLA, Jacksonville, and many other schools that themselves are not powerhouses top to bottom, but field some exception individual teams and they as college athletes are as deserving to compete and experience the Collegiate Championship as any team from the powerhouses that we know will always be represented at the NCAA Nationals. We as the volleyball community that includes not only players, but fans, coaches, and administrators need to provide a loud collective voice on this matter to assure this vital part of Collegiate Volleyball is not cast aside for logistical reasons. If we lose the "Pairs" competition, we immediately stop the growth of the sport as gone will be the ability of a smaller school to say to any prospective recruit that "... We can get you there." It will be a sport for the few powerhouse colleges who can afford to recruit and support Sand and the others will fall by the wayside.

Would love to see AVCA continue to do a pairs event if the NCAA doesn't include it initially in the national tournament. It would be best to have it on a separate weekend anyways.

Now that season is done, any thoughts on the top teams (not pairs) for next year in the first NCAA championship?

Now that season is done, any thoughts on the top teams (not pairs) for next year in the first NCAA championship? In my opinion...based on the institutions and their available resources I'm choosing FSU and USC to stay dominate. They both have great "packaging" as far as the traditional college experience goes. That will draw in the best talent (evening out 3-5 for those with decent returners) which normally translates to victories. I think every other school will be playing catch up and will force coaches to see how well/fast they can develop talent.

I agree that USC will stay dominant, and expect the other West powers (LBSU, Pep, Hawaii) to stay competitive. FSU was NOT dominant this season, it was a down year. Their only real win was versus LBSU early the season. With Corso's out and most of their top talent graduating, I see them rebuilding for a while. In the East I see FIU and Georgia State continuing their climb. Stetson will struggle in the future for much of the same reasons as FSU. Expect to see a couple other teams rise in the East.
