Nice thorough summation Cam. It appears guest 2 thinks 20 events, only half of which would contain "name" content, would save the AVP. I'll bet the New Orleans promoter would disagree . My guess is no names hurt NOLA bottom line. Promoters/ sponsors need some names. Misty was a great help this year I'm sure. Show up money or family? An über sponsor will fix everything and fans and more events will follow. Hell any major sport superstar could easily be that major sponsor/savior as a vanity project. Lebron you out there? :-) The AVP's approach is fiscally responsible albeit slow. I feel for the up and coming players with 16 team draws and weak payouts for lower finishes. Makes it real tempting to use your degree(s) to get a job, and relegate beach ball to hobby status.
10?
Your guess is what it is. NOLA had comparatively light attendance (apparently) and those who want to will put that down to lack of stars, but weather is a more likely explanation.
In terms of major draws in bvb there are two, and NOLA had one (Misty). It also had three of the four best known men's players (Todd and Gibb/Patterson) To say NOLA suffered from a lack of top players is one thing, but it wasnt low on starpower compared to past tournaments. For the last three years the events have frequently been missing Phil and Kerri due to injuries anyway. Kerri played one event last year. Phil has also missed roughly 1/3rd of the events. Was that a problem at those tournaments?
How many fans exactly do you think say to themselves, "well if Hyden and Kessey aren't there, I won't bother."
Besides, Beach volleyball tournaments need to be about the event the way the UFC is. Hardcore fans have this idea that the players are stars and draw fans, but outside of Kerri/Misty it simply isnt true. Maybe some of the hardcore fans wouldnt show up for a totally depleted event, but there isnt much evidence thats true. (or untrue, there arent a lot of examples of it happening)
