tank their match against Canada? Italy has clinched 1st place in the pool. If they let Canada win, the loser of Brazil-France is out (assuming USA beats Mexico, which is pretty close to a sure thing).

The other way to look at that is that they have several "experienced" players (in their late 20s and 30s) Who might benefit from an extra two days rest to get ready for the quarterfinals.....

Italy has 1st place locked up. They have not subbed all tourney long and already lost a middle to injury for the tourney.
I can see them resting a fee guys and going with backup.....and this would not have the illusion of tanking at all.
It might be smart for multiple reasons.

already lost a middle to injury for the tourney. . If you are talking about Emmanuel Birrarelli who is the team captain as well, he actually played in their match against Brazil. IIRC, he came in to replace Buti in sets 3 & 4. So Italy is at full strength come quarterfinals.

The definite smart move would be for Italy to throw it. I do wonder if they'd do it. But having seen Blengini and his general sleaziness, I think it might be probable.

they dont need to throw it, they need to rest their starters & let the chips fall wherever.. it will be a good experience for their 2nd string & give real meaning to fra-bra. what a boon for canada if they can win in 3.
good tactics that lead to later/final success is no way "throwing it"

Nothing is a given when the slate i's cleaned...let alone pool play. It's really all abut feel and momentum. Anderson has been steady Eddy. Russell is having a breakout Tourney. Both are leaders in offense. Sander is back in form. Christenson's offense is flowing and serving is on the upswing. Holt's serve and block is very effective will have a key offensive match soon. Shoji improved every match. Lee is flat out one of my favorite players in this tourney. So smart. USA VB teams are having fun...and that is infectious.

I agree %100 with gb77. Italy should play their subs and let the chips fall where they may. Not only can they rest starters but the playing time is valuable for the subs if they're needed later in the tournament. I don't look at this as tanking- just being smart and putting your team in the best situation to medal

Just looked at two different betting sites, and both have Canada listed as the favorite in the match today.
