Thayer Hall 6'3 OH Haley Warner 6'1 RS Marlie Monserez 6'0 S Lauren Dooley 6'5 MB/RS Riley Fischer 5'8 L Paula Cerame 5'7 L ...plus whoever walks on. Solid class for the Gators 🐊 Sadly, expectations are already high and they haven't even started classes yet. For 2018, yes. My original post was referring to Macy Phillips who is a 2017 DS for UF.

So for those who have watched or followed Spring and international play, does King or Kramer get the start at MB? I keep going back and forth. Kramer is proven offensively, albeit one dimensionally, but she struggles to close blocks and her block numbers weren't the best for her height. But how do you sit 6'8 after hitting .537 as a freshman (283 TA)? King is obviously the more complete MB and will likely be a dominant and more explosive middle offensively and defensively in her career. I wonder who Florida's back up RS is. You've gotta think Kramer would have to be looked at if Joseph falters.
Florida's primary weakness, which has been beaten to death on this board, has been passing. If King can produce consistently above .400 and can block better (to make it easier on and set up the the back row), I'd have to go with King. But I also don't see Mary sitting Kramer to start the season unless she's given a reason to sit her.
With all that said, I think King ends up redshirting and Kellum is the backup middle unless Joseph stumbles on the right or Kramer stumbles in the middle.
Florida definitely has the experience and the height this year. Just a matter of finding the grit (and passing). Speaking of passing, I see Hammons subbing to play back row for Sokolowski. Since Joseph can't pass to the level Holston did, this should help us always have a back row attack option and relieve Hammons' "fatigue arm". We'll need her for good back row play and the occasional back row attack, not 3435348023539045 swings per season. I still see her potentially taking over for Soko and play 6 rotations, although I'm not sure if that's wise.
S - Monserez (R-Jr.), 5'9 L - Knop (Sr.), 5'8 MB - Alhassan (Sr.), 6'4 MB - Kramer (So.), 6'8 OH - Snyder (Sr.), 6'1 OH - Sokolowski (R-Fr.), 6'4 RS - Joseph (R-Sr.), 6'1
2018: Hall for Snyder King for Alhassan Gregory for Knop Kramer, Warner and Dooley have 2 positions open to battle for among them (MB and RS)

Based on what I saw during the spring (and it wasn't very much), the only backup to RS I see for Shainah is Mia. Which would then move Morgyn to OH2. None of the middles seemed comfortable nor looked good when they experimented on the RS. I personally think King should start. I remember one of the commentators (I believe Missy Whittemore) saying the staff wanted to work a little longer with King on her arm swing before setting her free on the court. I think her and Rhamat are the best middle combo we can put on the court. And Kramer should be first off the bench. But knowing the history of Wise, I can very easily see Kramer starting the beginning of the season.
My guess for a lineup is
OH- Snyder OH- Sokolowski (Hammons as DS) MB- Alhassan MB- King RS- Joseph S- Monserez L- Knop DS- Gregory
For 2018 it's
OH- Hall OH- Hammons MB- King MB- Kramer RS- Warner S- Monserez L- Gregory

I agree with both analysis. If you wanna beat Texas or Nebraska, you better close blocks. Kramer can't close blocks with that kind of tempo (and I'm not sure she ever will). I do see Mary Wise starting her though to begin the season against Texas which will make me cringe. She often chooses experience which I don't always agree with. I'm still holding fast on the idea that Kramer should redshirt and Kellum should be the third middle (she did well to start the season against Oregon last year). Hide her, develop her, bring her back; but I'm sure that won't happen. I think an Annika Albright type of role would be good for Hammons. I just worry about Greer and Sokolowski after this year. Do they find the court in 2018 or does Warner start right away like Holston?
Here's a real question. Does anyone think younger, 6'0 Marlie Monserez takes over or at least subs in for older 5'9 Allie at setter in 2018? Sure Allie is proven and knows the game well enough to get her hitters in good positions to swing, but you can't teach height. Thoughts?

All good stuff. A couple thoughts:
1) the new guaranteed scholarship rules indirectly play into red shirting options. Scholarship slots are even more valuable and they are pre determined so many years in advance. I doubt there is a slot available for Kramer to redshirt. Couple that with the fact she may not want to and that scenario probably doesn't work. It may but is probably wishful thinking.
2) I don't think you start a freshman setter over her experienced sister. Some experimentation with systems and frosh getting some playing time, yes. But probably not starting. Our ability to grow a setter from beginning to end is less than stellar. That being said, all reports are that junior has more raw talent including aforementioned height.
3) I don't think passing was terrible last year (sans Fsu game). As all teams, we need to serve better and serve/receive better. But even Stanford says that. It's step one to any championship team. I'm sure Mary and her staff are working hard on that one. If they don't get it worked out, none of this will matter.

As far as the setting, I think Marlie will get playing time in the easier matches and when UF has a big lead in a match vs. a weaker team, but I do not think she will start over Allie. Kellum did well against Oregon and she had 5 blocks against Michigan State but I don't think she is up to par with King or Kramer, IMO. I wouldn't redshirt anyone, just let them battle for starting spots and step up when their time is called.

From watching Kramer play club I would say that Wise's experiment(if you want to call it that)is going very well. With that said 2017 is a crucial year for her. If she can get it right I for sure see her being the starter in 2018. As for Dooley that will give her a little bit more time to get it right. As for Liberos they will be set with both Fischer and Cerame.

But also it does not hurt to have two talented young ladies waiting in the wings. Just saying.

So why were the Gators practicing at Flagler? I believe it was part of some team building exercise.

Is Florida offering a stream of the Vert Challenge matches? It seems they are not televising those not involving the home team.

I am excited to see what Florida is going to do this year. It will not be easy with Holston gone but I do believe they have the fire power and some help with passing to do some big things this year! And they are back in the O dome.
