Mick didn't recruit those "loaded guns." Former coach Jerritt Elliott did. Jerritt had the nations top recruiting class two years in a row just before Mick took over. Success breeds success, so now Mick (probably, Paula) can recruit other great players, who, like most people without inside information, know nothing of Micks' tenure with The National Team. Pleaseeeeeeee, as if April Ross and co did not knew then that Mick Haley is coming in to take over. There was an issue in volleyball mag on Ross and other top players like Olsovsky, Schrad, Robinson and Becky Warnick (what happen to her?) Ross said that she committed to SC because she thought Haley is a good coach. Elliot should kiss Haley's feet for making him looked good because he got a lot of credit for the 2000 and 2001 class. I do not think that he deserved the credit. If he is such a great recruiter, what did he not get any top class when he was under Lisa Love

Yes, they knew that they would be playing for Mick, but they had never PLAYED for Mick before, and knew nothing about what he was doing as coach of The National Team (as I posted before, only those with inside info actually knew, then or now.) My post was to counter your assertion that Mick "inherited" the No.1 recruiting classes and that possibly he had nothing to do with their recruitment. He was involved in laying out the 5-year plan for Jerritt to follow, including securing the recruitment of top vball recruits in so cal and arizona.

But after a while, they knew, and yet they all chose to stay, so clearly, he's not as bad as you want us to believe he is. I think you just have some kind of personal vendetta against him. Did he outrecruit you? Did his teams beat you too many times in a row? I'm not a MIck Haley fan or a USC fan, but I just think it's funny you want to bad mouth the guy. Again, as I've stated, if a coach is that bad, there are usually transfers, lots of them. So, where are they?

You don't think Mick's connection with the national team had anything at all to do with Jerrit's ability to contact those players that were involved with the various youth, A2, and other national teams? Wake up... How many players of similar calibre has Jerrit recruited to Texas?

Tell you what. Everyone who thinks that Mick Haley is a good volleyball coach and treats his player with respect, get a copy of the 18 plus players who trained with The National Team during Micks' tenure. Then track down the unmarried ones and date them. After you get to know them well, ask them about their time with Mick.
Then post again.

Many college volleyball players stay in school despite coaching problems. That is happening at Indiana right now. They stay DESPITE the coaching problems. They stay because they like the girls on the team. They stay because they came to college to get a (free) degree. They stay for lots of non-volleyball reasons.

I don't know the happenings between Mick and his national team players, so I can't comment on that.
But his behavior with the USC team has been different. He knows when to push his players, how to motivate and challenge them to strive for higher goals and when to back off. In several articles I have read, he mentioned of the challenge of getting the team to be patient especially in the early season when everything is still not in place, especially with the setting (last year in incorporating Kimi into the system -- he could have just gone with Anderson right from the beginning but he did not; this year, again he is preaching patience to his team while they adjust to the tempo of the new setters). Also, he keeps emphasizing the educational aspect of the players' careers while they are/were in college.
Maybe he does have multiple behavior types and that could be due to the different working environments where in college he realizes he needs to be more patient with his players and guides them carefully while at OTC, it is with professional players there earning $$ and who maybe should be able to take all the good and bad (and trashies) that take place in a typical business office. Don't you wish that you could strangle your boss?

This post is too frickin' funny! I'll add my $.02 to the mix:
-Mick Haley = well-connected from way back in the volleyball world. As far as actual cognitive ability in the sport, I'd put him somewhere between IdaDork (on the low end) and the JV coach at Mira Costa (no offense to this person, whomever that is...). And he did use his influence while National Team coach to recruit the current athletes on his squad at USC. Elliot was just a placeholder.
-Lindsey Berg = could be overweight, could not be overweight due to genetic predispositions and a endomorphic bodytype. Doesn't matter, she gets the job done.
-Gorf/Ruffda = pretty good insight on volleyball issues. Still completely clueless on politics. LOL.

Maybe when USC have a mass exodus like Washingston state did and the players spilled the dirt on their coaches and they ended last in the Pac 10 and did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. Then you can post again

several of the members of the national team then only stayed because of their love for the sport and their ultimate goal (olympic) if they weren't cut by surprise
