I finished Fallen Order last night. Overall, it's a pretty solid game, probably an 8 or 8.5. It's definitely not as good as the Star Wars games from the glory years of LucasArts (e.g. KOTOR 1 and 2, the original Battlefront games, TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight, etc.), but for Disney/EA, it's pretty solid. The exploration is fun, and the combat is too in most encounters. The two primary sidekicks (well, not counting the adorable droid that accompanies you) are both pretty boring, though one of them gets a bit more interesting toward the end. There are some tertiary characters that are actually a lot more interesting than the secondary characters. Some of the storytelling toward the end was quite good, such as a retelling of the execution of Order 66.
My one big complaint is that nearly all of the boss fights were an enormous pain, even on normal difficulty. I don't like boss fights where I feel like I have to play completely different than normal. This is different than, say, Ghost of Tsushima, where the boss fights felt like a natural extension of the combat system. Melee enemies in this game are a pain anyway, but most of them can be dealt with either by force pulling them in for an instant kill or force pushing them off a cliff. These tactics don't work on bosses, and I never felt like the parry system was that intuitive. Maybe that's my own fault for playing the rest of the game the way I did, though the game let me do that, so I think it's more on them. I usually just lowered the difficulty for the boss fights to get through them.

Classic complaint about boss fights when the game lets you "play your own way" and invest in (for example) making yourself full stealth or full sniper, but then forces you into boss fights where you must melee.

(pun intended) ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) Had to lower the difficulty for just the last boss fight, and even then I had trouble winning the fight. The other boss fights I played through maybe 10x before I finally won.

The other boss fights I played through maybe 10x before I finally won. Yeah, it's one thing if I find the fight fun, and maybe I lose a few times but get closer as I figure out the right tactics. But with these boss fights, it was pretty clear after one failed attempt that further attempts would just lead to more frustration. And I also think they really expose some of the problems with the combat system (for example, the healing animation takes way too long and is prone to interruptions). I don't have time to fight a boss 10 times if I don't enjoy the fight, and I'm not going for an achievement (e.g. for beating the entire game on the hardest difficulty). So I just lower the difficulty and move on.

boss grinding can be super frustrating
in days gone, i have earned my first skill point and used it to acquire the ability to repair melee weapons away from base. now i can stand and fight a bit longer which is good. i am trying to find a good way to take down infected enemies that doesn't exhaust my ability to heal

Coming to a Galaxy near you... Not really, but Limited Run Games will start taking pre-orders for Star Wars Republic Commando for PS4 and PC www.limitedrungames.com/collections/neo-frontpage/products/limited-run-397-star-wars-republic-commando-ps4I've ordered and received Jedi Academy I & II, but haven't played it yet as its in the US and no one can send it to me. But I do remember Republic Commando was an awesome game. It ended with the possibility of a sequel because one of the commando was missing, but there were signs that he was still alive...and I was looking forward to a sequel. But nothing came from it. I may have to order this. I missed out on Dark Forces I & II.

I went ahead and pre-ordered the Mass Effect Legendary edition. The developers put out a blog post with all the changes, and everything looks good to me. The game most in need of attention is the first one, and I pretty much approve of everything they're doing. I can finally play these games on my PS4.

OK, played my third playthrough of Heaven's Vault. I'm thinking that will probably be my last. Well ... it wasn't. I'm doing some work that involves heavy CPU crunching by my work computer, with a side effect of me having some strange intermittent work schedules. And there was one achievement I hadn't earned, as well as a few plot twists I hadn't tried to generate. So I started a fourth game. And I'm still being surprised by things. One thing you can do is buy a worker. (Not that you want a slave, but because he has some info you are told you need. Even though you don't actually need it.) First time through I was reluctant to buy the worker. I finally did offer to buy him, but the seller was offended by me trying to lowball the price, and refused to deal with me. The result was that I found a secret moon, and when I discovered the main secret, I encountered an abandoned slave. She insisted I should take her back to her home (the place with the slave market). So I did. Second time I bought the injured slave. He led me to the secret moon. Then he and the abandoned slave attacked me. However, I managed to escape and I could have left them to die. Instead, I saved them and brought them to the capital moon Iox. However, they later caused some trouble there, and in fact it managed to lock me away from IOX for the rest of the game. Third time I directly found the survivor and took her back home, then went back to the secret moon. Now this fourth time I refused to buy him, but apparently said the right thing somewhere and the slave trader simply gave him to me. I refused to take him to the secret moon, so he knocked me out and took me there. I went and found the two of them, and they told me they were stealing my ship. But I "hoppered" back before they could. So again, I could have left them to die. Instead, I rescued them. This time I took them to a different moon, one that was far away from both Iox and their home moon. This led to a dialog where it was strongly implied that perhaps the woman I had just saved was my own sister (the main character was raised in an orphanage and has no knowledge of her parents). Since this moon I had taken them too was also where I could get the last achievement I hadn't picked up (by selling my robot pal), I went ahead and did that while I was there. It's kind of wild how many different choices they coded into the game for this one interaction.

I had high hopes for Days Gone. The only game I was totally disappointed in was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Couldn't get into it even though I played for about a week (?).

For the gamers, anyone you follow on twitch.tv / facebook gaming and youtube??? It's probably obvious from my previous posts, but I enjoy the Outside Xbox / Outside Xtra crew. Also some of their usual partners in crime, like Eurogamer.
