Phil/Nick did not play their best. Like JB said, they looked tried from about the middle of the 2nd on. Nick put a bunch of balls into the net, and they weren't close to going over. I wonder if the travel and the cold weather really took a toll on them this week. Nice to see them pull out the win in the end though. And to see Phil show a little emotion after getting that last block for the win!

some great rallies, the defender for RUS was fun to watch. Phil and Nick looked gassed in the 2nd set when they took their timeout. Krasilnikov. Really good player, feels like he's flown under the radar a bit.

He played lights out I think. Some great digs and put aways. The big dude set pretty well also.

Wow what a finals. Very good match. Russia lost it by serving out to many times and not serving nick every ball. Nice to see USA with a first and second place πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πͺ Yep. I don't know why the Russians all think they are going to win off Phil. That 3rd set was outstanding. I love the drama that comes with every Nick/Phil final, knowing that at any time they can run off 5 straight or give up 5 straight.

Do they always run that little bump quick thing to the big guy or was that because they were playing Phil? Either way seemed to throw Phil off his game and he never really adjusted. Other teams with better setters may want to go to school on that a little

Other teams with better setters may want to go to school on that a little Krasilnikov/Liaman are a new team, so I haven't seen enough to get a feel for their style. It was interesting to see how they attacked the U.S. block, though.

Guessing the quicker tempo is just way easier for him to hit.

Probably why the Russian federation paired him up with (now retired) Dmitri Barsouk, far and away their most experienced defender. Took a 5th (I think) with Barsouk in the 2016 Olympics, pretty good start. Interesting point about tempo.

They destroyed the lion king and company. A treat for me to watch.

So, Moscow had the same purse as the AVPs. But, with FIVB taking more teams, it cost Phil and Nick $5K. That was a heck of a field for 1st place being $10k to split.

very entertaining men's final. It's been a while since I've seen that many long rallies. As mentioned the Russians made some bad decisions on serve but their defense was incredible. Nick didn't look as explosive to me as he used to. In one of the recent AVP tournaments I saw him play without a shirt and it looked like he has added a few pounds. You could also see that Phil doesn't play mistake free volleyball but in the end his blocking and serving usually saves the day.

Not crazy to assume that this travel is going to wear down some teams even at the start of the season
