Man. It would have been depressing around here if the badgers had lost. I'm glad they won, if only because I don't have to lift everyone's spirits anymore. I'm glad you don't have to pick us up off the floor. Have to say the fans did a better job this evening too...only got quiet at the end of the 3rd when the wheels came off. Otherwise, an intense crowd that pushed when things got tight. Yay, Badger fans!...so glad the students showed up!

Stat of the night: Between both teams, 28 service errors in 4 sets. Ouch.
Throw in what seemed like 10 net violations by the Huskers and that match was an efficiency-lover's worst nightmare.

Congrats to Badgers. It is a shame on that overturn and carry. A 5th set would have been fun. I am not sure how I feel, generally, about challenging a touch. I am not a big instant replay guy in general, unless somehow they do something like call a ball in when it's a foot out or something like that. Net violations may be OK, too. But, touch or no-touch is not something I'm big on using replay for. Usually really hard to tell from our replays, and probably all evens out in the end anyway. As to Rettke's "carry," I thought in live action that it was a carry. It looked bad to the naked eye. When they played the replay on the video board I was far less convinced it was a carry. Mind you, I have a biased view of it and only saw the one replay. On a separate note: I have been has hard on Gillis and her performances this year (and past years) as anyone. She played a strong match tonight. Tip of the cap to Gilly, she has shut me up...for now. Hopefully she keeps shutting me up. Great match as well from Duello. That was great to see. Only way the win could've been better is if they had dealt with their 5th set demons as well.

We were at the match. We sit behind the scorer's table. I saw the touch live, and saw it again on the monitor that shows the video angle as the official is reviewing.
She didn't take long to overturn the call. This wasn't a fishing expedition. The evidence was there. You notice that the Huskers didn't challenge or protest or anything. The touch happened.

This was a good match. Badgers served tough. Note that in set 3 when we stopped making service errors, the Huskers had their way with things. We stopped serving aggressively. I'll take higher errors if it gets us aggression from the service line. We'll get it dialed in.
Props to Syd for running a gutsy offense and setting the risky sets. Props to Gilly for handling her business in serve receive. Props to Bates for being a rock on the court. HUGE props to Madison for blocking well and hitting smart.
I'm glad the Huskers didn't just roll over. I'm glad they put up a fight. The Badgers needed to prove to themselves that they could come back and dig deep and win in these situations.
On Wisconsin!

The Nebraska offense was so much more interesting and fun to watch, they have a great season to come. Wisconsin is so boring. injury and lack of talent Hahahaha. Did they not recruit your granddaughter? Don't we basically run the same offensive with Nebraska taking a few more backrow attacks and the Badgers run a few more crossing pattern and an occasional 21.

Yeahhh watching the BTN broadcast now, you can see the touch by Foecke on the first replay. You can also tell by her demeanor before and after the challenge that she knew it was going to get turned over. Well, Badgers figured it out, stop Albrecht and you can handle Nebraska.

Here is something to think about since I don't have to be positive anymore. First, the badgers won set two going away with only 7 kills. That is really strange. Second, in each of the last two sets, Neb hit ~0.370. So the late game defensive woes are still there. The block disappeared again. I'm thinking its either exhaustion, or lack of adjustment from the block. What was different is that UW hit almost 0.380 in that last set. That is grit right there - at least on the offensive side. When one aspect of your game is not working - or you're taking the best shot the opponents give, you give back.
So my take is that there are still problems, as there are on the husker side of the net, but props to the team for fighting through them tonight.

Does this hurt Nebraska's chances of hosting a regional? They've still got a good chance to win the conference and if they do that I can't imagine them not being one of the top 4 seeds. Florida and Stanford are pretty much set unless one of them goes and starts losing a bunch of matches. I hate to say it but Texas is probably going to get another top 4 seed even if they lose the rematch with Kansas because it's Texas. So if that were all to go down the way I envision my guess would be :
1. Stanford/Florida 2. Stanford/Florida 3. Texas/Nebraska 4. Texas/Nebraska
There are a few other teams that could factor in, too. Penn State could close out the conference season strong but I just don't see them winning all the matches they've got left to face.

It was a really big win for the Badgers. While they played really well in the first two sets, I was shocked that Nebraska didn't seem to show up until the third set. It certainly wasn't a good serving match on either side with all the errors on serves that weren't really trying to do all that much. Hunter made some really big plays as the Huskers rallied later in the match, but the Badgers were able to squeak it out in the end. Foecke didn't have the best match I have seen from her, but Clark helped in that by digging some rockets. Still, the kill she had to put the Huskers up 21-20 in the fourth was a great shot at a really sharp angle. After a bit of a jittery start, Sweet was able to get rolling and either tool the block or find the seam and put the ball away.
For Wisconsin, Rettke led the way offensively, but getting more production out of Duello made a huge difference. I also think neither of them were happy about not having any blocks on Saturday and meant to make up for that quickly. I thought Hilley had one of her best matches as a Badger, going for and mostly executing more aggressive sets or then going left once the Huskers were anticipating those. The connection with Williams was better, leading to some emphatic kills. Gillis had some really nice swings and did a pretty good job with an expanded role in the back row. All in all, it is just really nice for this group to finally get a big win.

I still think Neb has the inside track on the conference crown. It depends a little on how they do in East Lansing, but MSU still has to play PSU twice. Neb will be clearly favored against every team after that, unless something strange happens.

Nebraska does need a quick bounce back against Purdue, a team with the talent to beat them, but they do look to have the inside track to win the league if they can get by the Boilers and MSU. Sparty still has Penn State twice, two tricky rivalry matches with Michigan, and at Purdue left, in addition to the match with the Huskers. I do think if someone wins the B1G outright, they should probably grab the last seed.

Regardless, you saw it on the face of the Nebraska blocker. When they huddled, you knew the call would be overturned. It was one of the quicker replay reviews all year. I'm really surprised people would question it. Perhaps the BTN didn't have the angle they showed on the big screen. It seemed pretty obvious it was a touch. I know the Nebraska team acted like they expected it to be overturned.

I want to weigh in on the Rettke's "carry" as well. The refs were being consistent. There was a much worse "carry" I believe it was the 3rd set by Holman. That wasn't called either. The refs don't call those plays anymore. It's a shame. I would have called both Rettke's and Holman's carry. But if you don't call it on Holman, you can't call it on Rettke.
About 10 years ago the refs stopped calling a lot of the carry's as well as double contacts on sets. There are turning the refs into glorified score keepers only. There were some questionable sets tonight too on both sides. Nothing was called there either.
These are two elite programs both playing at very high levels. I wish they refs held all the players to a higher standard. But they don't and they haven't for many years now.
There is no way that they could call Rettke for a "carry" after letting Holman get away with much worse earlier.
