I am the first person who wants to see more of Loberg. But, again, I don't see what Sheff is seeing. There has to be some reason he's staying with Gillis and Duello. I think you could see in one match where you sensed he thought more of Loberg than Duello as an offensive threat, but definitely still felt Duello was a better option defensively and serving. Gillis was supposedly reaching new heights of performance in spring and training camp prior to yet another ankle injury. Maybe he is waiting on her to get back to that level. I really don't know. She was especially frustratingly ineffective against Minnesota. Totally worthless in that match, in fact. I was shocked her hitting % when I saw the stats still managed to be in positive territory One of Gillis's MOs in the past has been slowness regaining form coming off an injury. I imagine the coaches and Gillis are frustrated with what they are seeing offensively from her, but they also know that she often comes good at some point. I can't speak to much on Loberg - when she has come on so far, there has not been that sense that she was obviously better. She had some nice matches in Kansas, and I was excited by what I saw. But those teams were a mess at the time. She really struggled against Lipscomb and TA&M coming into the season, which is why she got dropped. We breathed a sigh of relief when we saw Gillis in those matches. But Duello's lack of offense is a real problem. It's not Duello's confidence but her skill. It's a lack of wrist and elevation giving her VERY limited angles, in my opinion. I've spent ZERO time with her in the gym but from video she doesn't seem capable of snapping short or elevating.

I'm thinking they won't try major surgery like that until after the Neb match. To implement it in the NEB match would be tantamount to a forfeit (unless they have been secretly practicing it in the gym -- maybe that was the lineup that Punzel said surprised him!). It's taken a while to get the connection to Williams right. To play her on the right one rotation would take some adjustment. Running double quicks with a true freshman walk-on as an option would take work. And will teams actually pay any attention to her? Will she really be a threat at this level? Rettke is not going to hit backrow except on service until she can show she can defend an attack into her body. Duello has probably been our best most consistent server, and she is not in any of those systems proposed. Given how critical our serve (or lack thereof) has been just recently, that's a problem.
Sheffield has had Carlini all this time, so he has not had the need to invoke such a major change in system mid season. I really don't know how likely he is to try something like that at all.

Doesn't Gillis also have a bazillion more attempts than her though?

Okay, so you may beat the page count, but I don't think you can match that feeling of "this has been going on FOREVER." There's some kind of magic in that thread... or something.

Grit is a good word for what is missing. Comes only with experience. I love Nelson's quote by Hilley. 'I know you guys are in a tough spot right now, but I’d give anything to be in that tough spot if I was still playing.’

Honestly, I feel like it's all mental for the Badgers right now. Yes, some personnel changes are necessary but this team isn't playing bad ball right now. I'd take Grace as an OPP right now and leave Gillis in. Hilley isn't completely comfortable setting behind her in OOS, so you need an OPP who can put the ball down when it comes her way. Grace will have her mistakes, but she's a freshman. It's a bit inexcusable for Duello not to better the ball by now. The only thing you're losing with her on the bench is her serve, which is where I believe A-Mac comes into play. She's been consistently putting teams OOS with her serve for years. Is Bell's serve better? Yes, but then Bell needs to serve for Gillis and then bring Dodge into play back row. Sheff has done that before -- used a serving sub for his OH, then have Dodge play back row. Why not now?
Bates is playing good ball, Clark is a stud in the back row, Hilley and Rettke need to find their timing again so there's no question whether the ball is going down on a back set. Williams is true to form and I'd take hit/miss Gillis since she's getting OOS balls most of the time anyway. From what I've seen, she spends every season being outplayed by the other OH (Bates, Haggerty) until mid-season where she just turns into She-Hulk. I don't see any reason why they can't take the Huskers (or anyone) to 5 sets with a few changes.
