No one is more aware of this than Husker fan. You'll find the occasional goob who thinks we'll compete for national titles again soon, but the vast, vast majority of fans understand what Nebraska will be moving forward. At this point, we need to crack .500 before anything else. From there, competing for the Big Ten West. So is “the mob” really just the old big money donors surrounding the program? On other sites I’ve frequented that focused on Badger Football, we mostly only got visitors/trolls from Iowa and Minnesota that would post. I can’t remember a single Husker fan joining that board, but I remember all the delusional Gopher and Hawkeye fans. That definitely sounds familiar. There's a cottage industry of trollery in the Big Ten, where opposing fans will pose as homers on a message board and post out of their [hind end] to make the home team look bad, or just screw with people. On Nebraska boards, several of those accounts joined right around 2010/2011. I'm not sure what the reference to "the mob" was. Nebraska football has been controlled by old and new money for decades, much like any other current or former major team. Folks on message boards don't really impact the AD, no matter who the AD is. I think booing in the stadium is far more influential.

Perhaps a better analogy is Minnesota Football. I think the Gophers have around about the same fully realized national championships as Nebraska. Nebraska's heyday was a generation ago. Minnesota's was two-ish? Maybe three? Minnesota was barely relevant in the 1960’s, and their last “national title” was a year they lost the Rose Bowl. They were pretty dominant back in the 1930’s though, so that’s 90 years ago, and pretty much no one alive remembers those days. Minnesota fired Glen Mason in a similar manner to how Frank Solich was canned, and the Gophers were mired in futility for nearly 20 years until PeeWee Fleck has made them competitive again. Ironically, Peej is someone that Nebraska might try to hire away, and I would instantly break out the popcorn to watch how that unfolds for both programs. The landscape has changed since Nebraska was last dominant, not being able to stockpile talent after the 85 scholarship limits, and no longer being able to take partial qualifiers. Those two things are pretty major stumbling blocks to returning to the glory days Husker fans think is just the right coach away. It’s not. I agree. The rest of the country also caught up to Nebraska in the strength and conditioning (read: steroids) department.

"The mob" is a figment of holiday's imagination and made an appearance in this thread within the past couple of days.

At this point, we need to crack .500 before anything else. From there, competing for the Big Ten West. An ESPN source said Nebraska's going to hire the Iowa State coach as soon as the season's done. All I could think was--why would you leave a Big 12 title contender, a team that made a big bowl two years ago and is now putting out NFL players regularly for Nebraska? That statement right there tells you how far Nebraska's fallen. What they need is a coach needing a redemption arc (Urban Meyer--yuck) or they need someone from FCS with proven results like the James Madison coach (just moved to FBS). Yeah. I think Matt Campbell might actually take the job if he's offered a lot of money, but the fact that we're even asking if it's a good idea tells you all that you need to know about Nebraska these days. Iowa State has never won 10 games in a season and has only won nine games three times. Granted, I don't think there's a lot of pressure on Campbell now, and there would be a lot more in Lincoln, but if it doesn't work out, he can get a huge buyout like Frost did.

So it looks like Campbell is only making $4 million at Iowa State. Frost was making $5 million (the renegotiation lowered it to $4 million this season, but he got a $15 million buyout, so he was paid a lot more than $4 million to go 1-2 this season), and I'm guessing they'll pay the new coach at least that much, probably more if they're trying to lure away a P5 coach like Campbell. A career assistant might start out a little lower, but this is Nebraska, so I doubt it.

I think Nebraska could/should be a top 20 job. It's probably a top 10 program in terms of NIL potential and they need to put someone in place who can capitalize on that.

There's obviously no end of money to spend on coaches, facilities, NIL, etc. The fans show up despite years of terrible results, and are clearly patient with allowing a coach time to build the program. It's a good job, at a place where you can win your division and compete for the conference title and possibly the playoffs on a reasonably consistent basis. It's frankly amazing a team with the resources Nebraska has hasn't had more success.

Some of the names being thrown out (e.g. Mark Stoops, Dave Aranda) would be crazy to take it.

The fans show up despite years of terrible results Until they don’t. Wisconsin football games were well attended up until the Don Morton era, and the nearly empty stands were the final straw at the end of the 1989 season. Don’t count on the sell mount streak and fans showing up if there’s yet another poor hire.

But--why leave a program you've built where they treat you like a god for a chance to become middle-of-the-pack? It may be more money but he's got an unlimited tenure right where he is. I'm not sure Nebraska would offer that. Nebraska boosters expect national titles (unrealistically) but Iowa State fans are good with bowls every 2/3 years. I've wondered if Hoiberg regrets leaving Iowa State for the Bulls and now being at Nebraska--same sort of reason...you are a god at one place and now a butt of jokes for the 150 existing Nebraska basketball fans.

There is definitely more risk in taking the Nebraska job than staying at Iowa State, but the upside is also higher. I don't think anyone who is already in a great situation (e.g. Mark Stoops, Dave Aranda) would take the job unless they were an alum. Campbell is about where I think the realistic options start. If it's a lateral move in terms of pay, I would stay at Iowa State. But if Nebraska offers a massive contract and buyout, it's worth considering.

But I don't see it as a big step up. I don't think Nebraska will EVER get back to where it was 40 years ago. Some have talked about NIL--but there's more of that elsewhere and other programs like Miami, UCLA, whatever, are in places with warm weather/"nicer" places to be than the middle of Nebraska. Illinois here is always firing people for not winning titles or doing well, way overestimating what people think of the school and athletics.

I agree that Nebraska's days of competing for national titles are likely over. Maybe Urban Meyer could do it? That's who I want to see them hire.
