The reward that a team receives that goes through the winners bracket undefeated is that they get to rest while the losing team has to play another tough match before they can make it back to the final. I don't think it's practical for scheduling purposes to have the possibility of another match to decide the champion. given how quick these matches are, the elimination bracket winner is not fatigued at all, has the opportunity to adjust to the wind that day, is in rhythm already, and IMO has a distict advantage going into the final. I would much rather be the team that played already than the team sitting waiting.

My vote is for a double final like the good ole days. If you come up thru the losers bracket you have to win twice! It’s the only way to have a true winner. In my eyes, FSU and UCLA split.

Some great discussion in this thread. One additional thought to bring up. Is their still discussion on bringing back the individual pairs championship? If so, it may impact how the team tournament is put together. With the current 8 team set up, a team coming through the losers bracket would play 7 matches, assuming a double elimination final (FSU versus UCLA round 3). If you add individual pairs, a top flight team like the McNamaras would need to play 7 matches in 3 days to win the team title plus additional matches for the individual championship. A single elimination tournament of 16 pairs would add 4 additional matches on top of the 7 they already played. That could be exhausting for an individual pair, even if that was played over the course of 4-5 days.

There's like 30-50 hawaii fans who regularly post here and two long beach fans (there used to be more but they vanished when their indoor womens team become irrelevant), and one cal poly fan lol. I’m just getting to know the Hawaii fan base and it’s definitely “interesting” and “unique”. I find it entertaining that on the men’s forum here at VT, the “Hawaii 2018” thread continues to pop up daily in between the more relevant threads pertaining to the recent NCAA men’s semis and finals threads, etc which Hawaii wasn’t a part of. Hawaii men’s program was indeed overlooked for an at-large bid by the selection committee, some even use the word snubbed, but Hawaii fans seem to take longer than most to move on. The committee overlooking the men for an at-large doesn’t seem to be nearly as awful as the committee’s evaluation of the at-large beach contenders and snubbing CalPoly and LB, yet you wouldn’t know by the endless complaining by the Hawaii fan base.

I get it Hawai’i fan. You guys are the bomb. At the same time a tough crowd to please. Charlie and his crew look so cute in their matching Hawaiian shirts. You got a lot to be thankful for over there. Keep the faith and hula on.

USAV has their Pairs Championship this weekend in Hermosa. You would never know it, not like USAV is gonna publicize it or anything, lol

I'm not sure I like the individual pairs events. After "experiencing" them as part of the Big West tournament, I found myself not caring.

Which can be done, but that would require some of the athletes to miss additional classes, finals, or possibly graduation. Not a huge deal as other sports do the same, but right now, it's not an expectation for the sport, so I could see some players being disappointed or skipping it completely. And as noted by rainmaker, the USAV has their tournament following the NCAA tournament. Not sure if that can be pushed back for the players or not.

You can minimize that of course by having it an easily accessible location on Saturday/ Sunday. Fly in Thursday night. Friday practice and banquet. Saturday 2-3 rounds, Sunday finish.
