I just finished watching all 3 matches. Thanks to all the streams available, I’ve been watching my daughter ref all weekend! Really fun, and she did a great job!
Anyway, here are my observations:
I think BYU needs to consider a 6-2. Because: **Bower isn’t an offensive threat when she’s front row. The rotation where Gneiting is right front was a problem last year is even more a problem this year without the dump threat from LHE. I wish they would just put Gneiting in the middle and hit a 1or a slide. But she stands one the right and that high set just doesn’t work. **Bower is not a good blocker. Maybe with some time in the weight room, she can be, but she’s a liability right now. **Im thinking Nixon and Grimmer on the right side with Bower and Tuiniga (?) setting. Robinson looked pretty good at OH tonight. Miller looked pretty good when she hit on the right, too. I’d like to see what she could do over there.
About 90% of practice needs to be passing. Mercy, passing was bad all weekend. If Gneiting and Echenberg can’t be set, BYU is in trouble. Strange we have 6 footers as DS’s with all those munchkins on the bench. How many subs are allowed? BYU could run out of subs a lot this season. If I was playing BYU, I’d tell my team, “We will do 10 burpees for every time Mary Lake passes a ball.” She’s going to have to start poaching I’m afraid.
Barber for Marquette was fantastic. Reminded me of RJP. What an arm. Marquette looked really good. Their libero was fun to watch. I’m not sure if Marquette passed well, or if BYU didn’t serve tough, but they were in system a lot. Not that they needed to use their middles with Barber and Lines on the left.
I think this BYU team is going to be REALLY good next year. A sweet 16 this year would be a huge accomplishment, but I’m doubtful. Hopefully they will surprise me!

So there is only one more game on the BYU Network down the stretch? San Diego on Oct 18?
Am I reading that right?

So there is only one more game on the BYU Network down the stretch? San Diego on Oct 18? Am I reading that right? Yes, that's right, but there are some games that will be broadcast on BYU TV Digital. I'm not 100% sure on what that means, but I think it means you can watch it through their free app on your phone or tablet (not sure about an actual laptop or desktop--I suspect not). Edit: Looks like you can watch it on your computer after all, as per Zazu's post below.

"On the Website
Although you won't be able to access digital only events on BYUtv's live stream, you can still watch these events on BYUtv's website. On the homepage, scroll down and select your event from the "Upcoming Games" section.
Or, you can access digital only events by visiting BYUtv's events page and selecting the sports event you want to watch from the list.
On the AppYou can also download the BYUtv app here to access digital only events. Once you've downloaded the app, you can scroll down and select your event from the "Upcoming Games" section. The app makes it extra convenient to access digital only events from your mobile device."
They have done this in the past with some other sports at BYU; I just don't think they've ever done it with volleyball and did not have a separate name for it, i.e. BYUtv Digital.

Nice story on Heather Olmstead and her family. "Nice story" is underselling it, I think. I was expecting some generic story about her childhood and volleyball career. Which is totally fine, but this was a lot more powerful than that. I don't want to spoil it, but there was also a surprise appearance from a very famous person in BYU circles. Really well done video.

Thanks for posting the Deep Blue feature. I was going to watch it, but had forgotten about it. My sister shared the story with me a while ago while she was reading that same book that Heather's mom is reading from. I really enjoyed hearing the people involved talk about it. I find surgery fascinating, though I've never had any desire to be involved in medicine.

Although the end of the match on Saturday was rough for BYU and hard to watch as a fan, I'm not down in the dumps about this team. I'm realistic about their level and what they can achieve this year, and I'm looking forward to seeing their matches this week.

Pretty good 4-minute feature on Mary Lake.
That was a pretty good video. I enjoyed her talking about her Team USA experience the most, and she made me laugh when she nonchalantly said, "I was talking to the head coach, Karch Kariya..." as if he's just some random coach. That would be like a basketball player saying, "I was talking to the head coach, Michael Jordan..."

I'll have more thoughts once I watch the match on demand (it's up on the website now, but I have to get to bed), but that was statistically BYU's best match of the season, albeit against LIU Brooklyn, which is the lowest-rated (by RPI) team that they're playing in their non-conference schedule.
Judging by the box score, it appears that just about everyone played well. Miller hit .409 with 10 kills, Robinson hit .400 with 10 kills and 2 aces, Eschenberg hit .385 with 6 kills, Gneiting finally had a good match hitting .500 with 7 kills and 3 aces, etc.
I'm not sure why Grimmer only played one set (probably to get some playing time to the bench players--13 BYU players appeared in this match), but she hit .333 with 3 kills. Ballard-Nixon had 6 kills and hit .231 in two sets.
As for Bower, I suspect that she played well, given that the team hit .371, and she had three more aces. I imagine that the plan is probably for her to be the setter for her entire career (more or less), so I'm not surprised that Olmstead didn't try a 6-2, which would strike me as panicky and shortsighted (I honestly can't overstate how little interest I have in seeing a 6-2 at this point of the season). Bower needs as much playing time as possible for her development.
It doesn't appear that BYU was really challenged much defensively, as they held LIU to .030 and only had 4 blocks and 22 digs the whole match. Obviously, the level of competition had a lot to do with BYU's dominance, but it's still encouraging. And given that Marquette just got a win at Wisconsin, that makes me feel better about that loss as well.

Yeah, I counted three overpass kills when I watched it this morning while getting ready for work. Watching the match basically confirmed what I thought. It was a glorified scrimmage, and BYU wasn't really challenged at all because they're just a lot better than LIU. That said, I think a match like this still has some value for a young team, particularly one with such a young setter. I thought Bower's sets were pretty good for the most part. She still had some that were off in their placement, but she had a lot of good sets too. In particular, the connection with Gneiting was a lot better than it has been so far. Her serve was also consistently tough. The only other thing I'd mention is that Robinson really had an excellent all-around match, as she also had three blocks and three digs (doesn't sound like much, but there weren't that many opportunities) and closed the match with consecutive aces.

Well it looks like they won't get challenged to much this weekend. Hopefully they can get their wrinkles worked out before they go up against the tough part of their non conference schedule starting next week.
