The article in its entirety from Honolulu Advertiser: UH volleyball player Watanabe out for seasonAdvertiser StaffAshley Watanabe, the starting libero for the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team, is out for the rest of the season after breaking her right hand yesterday. The second-ranked Rainbow Wahine open the NCAA Tournament tomorrow against Colorado at Fort Collins, Colo. Watanabe, a junior from 'Aiea, suffered a spiral fracture of her fourth metacarpal during practice, a UH athletic department spokesman said today. Watanabe earned second team all-Western Athletic Conference honors and was named to the all-WAC tournament team this season. Hawai'i won its fifth straight WAC tournament title last month.

This really sucks that it had to happen now. Ashley just started to pick up her game again and it was the right time to going into the NCAA tournament. Hard luck for Ashley.
I think Teisa Fotu will be the replacement for Ashley because Teisa has been steady in every position that she has been put in this year and I think Dave should reward her with playing time.

Shoot. We'll I didn't really want to see any injuries but if there is a position we are deep in, it's liberos. Fotu can do the job when she's focused and I guess they can put in Ong if she gets into a funk though Ong is not battle tested like Ashley and Fotu. It could be worse but I feel bad for ashley. Play throught the entire season and miss the playoffs. That is terrible.
It will also affect that Dave likes subbing Fotu in for Hittle when she gaffs on defensive rotations.

Fotu is not going to be a liability in the back row. She has replace Watanabe before and is actually a little more steady a passer. Watanabe is a better digger. But passing will allow Kamanao to run her offense so it might be for the better. The only problem arises if Hittle goes cold. There wont be a back up for her. Shoji might have to move another middle to the right in that event.

Hittle better turn it on.

I don't think Kelly is part of the travel roster. She usually isn't. I think they're limited to 12 players. I don't think they'll get to suit up the entire team until/if they make it to the Final Four.

Based on an observation that I made at the 1998 Final Four, I think that the roster size is limited throughout the postseason. Unless the rules have changed since then?

I do recall that even at the regionals last year, the roster size was limited because a few of the UH players had to take seats in the stands. That might be the case for the Final Four also.

When I read this, I thought "oh no, not again". The Hawaii post-season curse. Something always seems to happen during post-season. Hopefully, this is the worse thing that will happen on their way to the final four!!

Coaches (esp. UW, UH) , can we please move the ball handling, digging, diving drills away from the walls.

What a bummer! Earlier in the season I can't say that I was all that impressed by Ashley's play, but as the season wore on, I think she has shown a lot of heart on the court and really steadied out. She was on track to break the single season record for digs at UH which I think says a lot about her play this year. This season is over for her, but I look forward to watching her next year. Go Ashley!

I second that motion. It's too bad there isn't a way to protect your hands without affecting your dig surfaces. Plus you still need to pancake dig. Coaches (esp. UW, UH) , can we please move the ball handling, digging, diving drills away from the walls.

Can't they take Watanabe off the roster? There's no sense in taking Ash if she's out for the season. I don't want her to be left out but if we can take a backup libero then we should. Besides are you sure Ong isn't on there. I only count eleven people who are likely to play besides Ong and that includes Raecene Woolford. I don't think Kelly is part of the travel roster. She usually isn't. I think they're limited to 12 players. I don't think they'll get to suit up the entire team until/if they make it to the Final Four.

Ashley has been very tough throughout the season. I'm sorry that the injuries finally got to her.
Love ya Ash! Thanks for putting all you did into such a great season!
I understand that there is potential for her to get back to action if they made it to the Final Four.
As far as travel rosters go. They did not travel the rest of the liberos. Teisa will play libero and Raeceen Woolford will back her up and be available.

Wow, I just read this news about UH's starting libero...that's too bad at this junction of the NCAA playoffs. What if...UH had gotten to HOST the 1st and 2nd round playoffs at home as they should have...oh well, can't change fate now. You'd like to have familiar faces and pieces working for you, but UH will somehow still pull together for a couple of wins!
