He was impressive pre-injury. Very impressive. Hoping for a full recovery for him his summer and the chance to be on the World Championship roster. His serve is the differentiator ... on top of solid blocking and quickness

As I mentioned in the US/Serbia thread, Speraw has said there are 9 guarantees on the VNL Finals roster and Muagututia is one of them. Crazy.
Sunderland confirmed the 9 are:
E Shoji Christenson Anderson Patch Sander Russell Muagututia Holt Smith
5 more spots out there and I’ll go with Dagostino, Shoji, Jaeschke, Jendryk, Averill (it would be Stahl if healthy).

As unfortunate as some people see it, it's quite possible Speraw looks at Muagututia as he did with Priddy during the Rio Olympics -- a veteran he can depend on in must-need situations, not someone he has to lean on every match. Priddy was used sparingly but when we needed him? He was clutch against Russia when we were down 2-0 in the bronze match.
That's how I see Muagututia: a player we can't ride every match but when needed, his serve and offense can be useful. He's not of Priddy's world-class level but he's respectable enough.
Would I prefer someone like DeFalco? Sure. Absolutely. He has so many tangibles going for him, except that he is still fresh out of college and needs even more experience to handle the high pressure role he'll eventually have to carry. But that doesn't mean it all has to happen during this VNL or even this Olympic quad. Barring major injury, DeFalco has a lengthy career ahead of him and he is still behind Sander and Russell, who are definitely OH1 and OH2 for Tokyo.
There are worse situations to be in when considering depth, roles, and not have enough experienced players in the right positions.

I guess the debate is whether or not you take Muagututia on rosters for that veteran and dependable role, or DeFalco for the continued experience and development for this olympics/future olympics. IMO, Sander, Russell, and even Jaeschke are “veteran” enough for 2020. I’d like to see DeFalco because he brings HEAT attacking and from the service line... needs to work on consistency tho and receiving

bruinsgold I see what you're saying for sure - good post. I just wish you hadn't compared Muagututia to Priddy lol. Priddy was a 3x Olympian and a Gold medalist before Speraw took him to Rio. @disc808 I agree, plus those three you mentioned seem veteran and dependable enough based on previous Olympics, World Champs/Cups. **I don't know why I can't tag you, Disc**

And all the props to Muagututia for taking the opportunity and running with it. I also would like to see DeFalco in Tokyo, similar to Jaeschke from 2016. It’s nice for 2020 that Jaeschke has that experience and is a veteran of the Olympics, just as it probably would be nice to see TJ in that role in 2024. I do think DeFalco might miss out in VNL Finals (especially if not healthy), but I still think he is right there for a spot in Japan in October.

That's why I definitely made sure to include that Muagututia is not on Priddy's world-class level of playing but he fills that "if I need to throw someone in there with experience to help us out of a jam" utility player, that could be why Speraw has kept me around and may into 2020. I agree Priddy is by far more accomplished but, in 2016, he wasn't out go-to. He was our emergency relief.

Just because GM makes the roster this year doesn't mean he'll be on the Olympic roster. I'd much rather see DeFalco next year in the Olympics than worry so much about this years vnl

Thanks, it's too bad the site doesn't keep accurate stats though. Re: Blocks/Aces/Assists/Digs are all averaged per set for the USA sets played, not the individual player's sets played.

Fun Fact: Middle blockers that dominate the net win championships. It comes with height sometimes. Is that you, Humann? Love that Lisinac unforced hitting error against his presence. He can be great if he works on it.
