a healthy Lucarelli with the addition of Leal to the roster makes for a scary pair of outsides on Brazil. It's crazy how much depth they have, lots of guys on the bench would start on most other programs. Agreed BUT. I've watched Leal quite a bit this year and he was a reception liabilty for Lube and often subbed out of the backrow. Lucarelli's recovery from a serious achilles injury is just astounding and I don't understand how he did it. I understand he did play at a high level in Brazil this year but not sure how strong the overall league was. To your main point though, they SURE so have depth.

Watten got action in Berlin's Championship win over Friedrichshafen. Jendryk and Patch were very good with 13 and 29 points in the title match. Another good year all around for many many of our USA guys overseas. If Patch could develop a half-decent float serve, he wouldn't be such a liability for the US. Watching him perpetually miss his serves is painful. Was he any better at BYU? Patch's serve was so bad at BYU that the crowd cheered when he made it, which was about once per match.

Bulgaria will be vastly improved and Serbia (if they can get that setter position down) will be a contender.
Russia may be younger and hungrier from the outset.
Italy wont be a factor.
Poland may have egos and chemistry issues

I thought he was playing for Poland?

LoL Poland wants to slowly introduce the rigors of YEAR round volleyball to the Cuban and not shock him into retreat... Actually I think he isnt eligible until the Sept European Championships

Why is Sander captain again? He's giving off the wrong vibes whenever he's playing.

Hughman and the OPP from Ohio state strike me as guys that have yet to grow into their huge bodies. They have plenty of potential but they strike me as a bit stiff unlike an OPP like Patch or Ensing who are much more fluid in their body movements.

I really hope we see Tulieta and Dagostino get time in the VNL. I agree we need to have a plan in place post-Shoji. Hopefully these guys can play themselves into contracts for the fall. Other than Watten and Shoji, I only know of Manoogian and Zyndorf playing libero professionally.
I like what we have at middle blocker. Averill, Jarman, and Jendryk had some pretty good seasons. I think they have potential to replace Smith and eventually Holt.
Opposite remains a challenge. Since Stanley our only option has been to move an OH to the right side. There seemed to be potential with Murphy Troy after his season with Gdansk. Speraw used the lineup with Sander, Anderson, and Murphy in the 2015 World Cup Qualifier, but we ended up losing to Canada in the finals of that event. Patch had a great playoffs with Berlin, but I hear what everyone says about his serving woes. In the finals he had 2 errors in the four matches he played, which equated to 8% of his attempts ending in error. Looking at the playoffs as a whole, he had 26 errors, which was 30%.
With the VNL essentially being meaningless this year (there will be no ranking points assigned to it, as what ended up being the case last year), many teams will be resting their regulars to get ready for the World Cup and Olympic Qualifiers.

Why is Sander captain again? He's giving off the wrong vibes whenever he's playing. Man... Again with the Sander trashing. It's become a tradition. He's the most veteran player on the team that is likely to be active through the whole tournament. Could be simply that. On his demeanor, he is one of the most even-keeled players the US team has. The one exception I've seen is last year's VNL with Poland. But honestly, Poland (read: Kubiak) pisses off literally everyone in international Vball. But his highs aren't thump the table and his lows aren't depths of pity. That's helpful in a captain.
