Preach. She may struggle to start, but she will get there. She’s the best prep product out of Hawaii in a very long time. I'm happy Kahahawai found a home and will do well at Texas. But, I have to think that her playing for Hawaii would have really been good for the sport. Bring back the legends. I truly wish she stayed, but she was pretty dead set at going away. Wish nothing but the best for her. It’s always amazing to see the local girls shine on the big stage

Please educate me. How does recruiting differ so much from football? There seems to be no drama about incoming players committing and still be recruited by other teams. Also, as noted but the video of Nya, the talk is a done deal although she is a year away. How early can the girls sign and if they are not signing far in advance how are players locked in so early?

Volleyball recruiting still abides by the "gentleman's agreement" that once a player publicly commits in their sophmore year, almost all coaches no longer actively pursues the player. Tonya Johnson, the ex-Texas recruiting coordinator has stated multiple times that if this wasn't in (voluntary) effect, she would have gotten out of coaching long ago. She didn't have the time or energy to constantly worry about losing a commitment.
It used to be the same way in softball, but that has since eroded. In fact, the ex-UT softball coach who started the program, still clung to that philosophy and lost out on some prospects because she wouldn't try to flip a player. And the fans like me were unhappy with that naive approach.
Like most non-football sports, the primary signing day is November of the year before their season starts.

Obviously, the NCAA does not recognize a "verbal" commitment (in any sport); only signing an LOI prohibits coaches from other schools to contact/interact with them. So, after a recruit makes a verbal commitment, it's up to them and their families to decide if they will allow coaches from other schools to remain in contact with them (whether it be text, phone calls, in-person visits, etc.). Part of the reason why fans don't get wind of any "drama" is because unlike football, there really aren't any volleyball recruiting services who are keeping up with verbally-committed players showing newfound interest in other programs. In volleyball, compared to other women's sports like basketball and softball, it seems as if verbal decommitments are few and far between. The only Longhorn player I can recall who decommitted from another school (Berkeley) and eventually signed with Texas was Chiaka Ogbogu. I can't think of any Longhorn verbal commitment who decommitted from Texas and signed with another school. With the transfer portal and the extra COVID season of eligibility, I can see more verbal decommitments occurring as high school players will now be having to scrutinize unexpected roster changes (and depth charts) at schools based on when they verbally committed, to when the time to sign their LOI approaches. And, there might be situations where college coaches have to tell recruits who gave them a verbal commitment that recent roster changes have unexpectedly affected their scholarship, and that one is no longer available.

Abby Buckingham decommitted and then committed to TCU, but I think that had more to do with an injury if I’m not mistaken.

Found a video from her tournament last week and the hit at 4:34 is just a swing of beauty 🤘🏽 She is attacking all over the court, back row defense looks very solid, goes on service runs but yes that attack down the line is pretty phenomenal. Looks very versatile, comfortable at the pins and very physical.
