That’s all fine and good until you stray out of your lane and talk about a culture you know nothing about. . . Talking about “culture”, how is Mike McQueary doing these days? Cheers! And that’s just pretty unnecessary Are you the kind of person who doesn’t care about brave people? Sad

And that’s just pretty unnecessary Are you the kind of person who doesn’t care about brave people? Sad Dude...you seem to be confusing moronic with brave; besides believing red elephants are a real "thing", this is a PENN STATE 2020 thread. Talk 'bout staying in your lane?

Agreed 2 person serve receive has to go. I think this year will change. Wisconsin is the team to beat. Minnesota is next. Nebraska is a dumpster fire with all their transfers with more to come. I can see Michigan making waves. Illinois is going to struggle. Indiana will surprise as well as OSU. A team who played in a regional final, returns every key player and will have 3 starters who played in an NCAA final is a “dumpster fire” ? Maybe I’m old and out of touch but does a dumpster fire now mean really good? who are those 3 players?

It'd be sweet if we could keep this as a Penn State 2020 thread.

Not sure what is comedic or ignorant about it. You defend yours, I’ll defend mine. That’s what’s great about sports. Cheers! That’s all fine and good until you stray out of your lane and talk about a culture you know nothing about. . . Talking about “culture”, how is Mike McQueary doing these days? Cheers! Yes yes yes of course McQuery.... LINCOLN, Neb. -- Two former Nebraska football players have been charged with first-degree sexual assault in connection with the reported rape of a female student in August. I can do this all day. This is a Volley talk not a pissing contest. Give it a rest.

Most system choices bring with them strengths and weaknesses both specific to the system and relative to the personnel. PSU 2019 choices were mostly about maximizing Parker's attacking role and adding flexibility in the use of the middles. These decisions are made fresh every year just like at any serious program. How this choice impacted Blossom (and anything else) was evaluated in comparison with other options, just as at any serious program. Agree, although the MF is typically a sign that your middles are more comfortable running 1/A/gap than a slide (which I think PSU only ran from Ro-5 this year - although I could be wrong on that), so I'd argue it was about reducing 'flexibility' of the middles and playing to their strengths while also maximising Parker hitting the D. The interesting thing, to me, was that they started the season passing 3 and had to switch to passing 2 the majority of the year when Parker struggled (I think the Pitt match was a game changer). The combination of passing 2 and the middle follow definitely impacted Blossom, and overall PSU's passing grade was way down from 2018 but, like you said, Rose clearly felt it was the best option they had. With the personnel changes, I'm not sure that he'll make the same choices in 2020. The flexibility wasn't the flexibility of running more slide routes. It was the flexibility of having the middles, especially Gray, available to take swings at the pins. It wasn't used as much as expected, but it was in the offense. Two person vs three person receive will be evaluated the same way as everything else. It's hard to receive with two at this level of play. For a given team, however, two person might be generally better than three person even if both break down with some frequency against good serving competition. Over the years PSU has passed with two more than most BIG teams. Overall reception quality of course varies from year to year. PSU does get aced less than would be expected most years in relation to overall reception quality. That's a plus.

I would be really surprised if we don't see AC Fitzpatrick in the lineup. She is one of the most complete incoming players we have seen since Courtney. I don't know how should would fare in a two person serve receive but I think she will be great in a typical system.
My line up would be:
MH: Hord, Gray OH: Fitzpatrick (6 rotations), Cathey (Front row only) Opp: Parker (6 rotations) S: Blossom L: Hampton DS: Bilinovic
If either OH gets in hitting trouble, you could use Flowers, Clark, and VDE as a front row sub and potentially have Parker stay to hit on the OH if needed.

Over the years PSU has passed with two more than most BIG teams. Overall reception quality of course varies from year to year. PSU does get aced less than would be expected most years in relation to overall reception quality. That's a plus. That last point actually brings up an interesting conversation in regards to PSU. While I'm with you in the "most years" sentiment - the 2019 Lions did something a bit different. The strength of their team offensively is their middles and, as everyone here knows, it is significantly easier to run your middles on a 3 pass than a 2. PSU's primary passers were super aggressive last year, with the intention of giving Blossom more 3 balls which Hord and Gray could crush, but the downside - as you rightly said, every schematic choice has positives and negatives - was that they got aced, overpassed or shanked more balls than teams with a comparable passing grade. I posted the good pass percentage for the last two years (57.8 vs 50.7) but when you add the team grade something jumps out. In 2018 the team grade was 2.3 (which is great) but in 2019 it was 2.19, which is still good. Typically a ~2.2 would usually translate to a good pass percentage in the ~55% range. But - and I can only conclude this was intentional, because it continued all year and if Rose was unhappy, I'm certain he'd have changed things - the PSU passers were way below that 55% mark, just above 50%. I suspect that's because of the desire to have more 3 balls. For comparison, Oregon also passed 2 the majority of the year and had a passing grade of 2.20 (tied first in the Pac-12) and had a good pass percentage of 54.8. PSU's lower good pass percentage but relatively high passing grade obviously means more 3 passes but also more 0s and 1s which must have been frustrating for a PSU fan but, given the success they had, it's hard to say it was the wrong call. The other interesting outcome of the 2 person SR is what it affected in conjunction with the MF offense. Due to the fact that the middle serves directly after the setter, instead of the outside, it changes the relative line up for PSU in serve receive. That is further impacted by the 2 person passing formation because, when passing 2 we teach the passers to line up wider than they think they'll need to be, apparently presenting an open area in the middle of the floor to the opposing server, and then to take a step towards each other as the ball is being served ('playing outside in'). You could see PSU's passers do this all the way through the season. But a problem arises because, by pushing the libero and DS so wide it caused the edges of the floor to be very crowded in certain rotations, when the rest of the team has to line up outside the two passers. This combination of systems impacted Blossom because she often had to run further than usual to reach the ball and take unusual paths in order to 'break in' to set. None of this is intended as a critique on Rose. As I said earlier in this thread, I think you're right that he was making decisions based on what he thought best suited the team. Hord and Gray are great, so a 3 pass usually gets put away. Blossom is very good and dealt well with the extra pressure. KW had the communication skills to coordinate passing 2. Holcomb and Hampton were good enough to pull it off. And when they were OOS, Parker is capable of bailing them out. But I thought it was an interesting combination of circumstances (largely brought about by the choice to play 3 pins, including a 6-ro opp) who can't pass. I'm interested to see how the incoming class allows Rose to use his chess pieces in 2020.

Is there any top talent left in the 2021 or 2022 class that Penn State could potentially pick up?

Agree that's the most likely line up to start the season but, again, I expect Bilinovic to take the libero jersey sooner or later. I wouldn't be totally shocked if it was sooner. She's a baller.

Hampton will be the L On top of which, with limited action this summer this will not help a HS kid take that spot from an experienced player of Hampton's caliber.
