WOW...any of us that just saw the Texas/Wisconsin match witnessed what an OUTSTANDING MIDDLE GAME can do for a program and look like. It was a fun match to watch. Now if only we had a 1st team AA middle...oh wait.

I remember going to Diet Coke Classic sessions with more opponent fans in the stands and a total of 150 fans attending, if we were lucky. Was this in the 80's or 90s?

WOW...any of us that just saw the Texas/Wisconsin match witnessed what an OUTSTANDING MIDDLE GAME can do for a program and look like. It was a fun match to watch. We also saw arguably the BEST middle in the country basically get shut down and neutralized. A lot of factors go into having an OUTSTANDING MIDDLE GAME. To have an outstanding Middle game you need consistent passing and good (at a minimum) setting which Texas has lacked for several years. Texas has always had great MB that hit for high % but their impact on the game was more defensive than offensive due to below average passing and inconsistent setting. This season has been a the first time in the last 8-10 years where the Middles have had an offensive impact. Having elite Pins and then Middles like Texas has currently is the reason they have been so dominate against some of the best opponents (Penn St, Nebraska, Wisconsin) in the tournament. Oh, and it doesn't matter if you have all that if you have chemistry issues. Texas had that too 2014-2018 and that was always a factor at the end of the year during the tournament. (Talent was always there!!!) Minnesota may be experiencing the same thing Texas went through; they will still be a good to great team, but a few cliques can derail the goals.

Vb prisoner refers to "a few cliques." I've had the feeling for 2-3 years that possible cliques have hindered the Gophers and/or caused various transfers. What specifically are/were the cliques Vbprisoner refers to? Or are there none?

Minnesota doesn't need to learn from Texas how useful a good middle tandem can be. We had our own as recently as, oh, 2019. That said, Rubright was very highly ranked. I'm hoping that she can develop into the next Regan. She's already a pretty good blocker.

I would not judge Rubright on this season. Like I said, a very weird season -- and I think she was one of the players who had COVID. Makes sense. I mean, we had no one other middles to play ....... What happened to Katie Myers? Some freshman come onto the court and make immediate impacts e.g Devyn Robinson on the big stage in the Nat'l semifinal The college game is much faster and Rubright hasn't developed the anticipation skillset. If you are reacting you are too late. It's not what you see it's what you expect to see. I hope, with experience, she will develop a more fire. She's too nice... similar in demeanor to Molly Lohman TX put on a clinic on Thursday: better first contacts, better second contacts, better block touches, and a ridiculously effective middle attack. Their approach and execution in this game should be studied. There is no hope for national title aspirations if MN holds to low error volleyball. Imo, the most impressive points in the last week have come from OOS swings for points: GA Tech's back row attacks after substandard passes, etc. and others too numerous too mention (except Loberg, who was having a BAD night in the quarterfinal, ripping down the line after Hilley nearly landed in the seats after an errant pass) If this year's NCAA's have taught anything the power of effective serving is undeniable. At this stage of the competition you are at a competitive disadvantage if the opponents are completely in system after your serve. I do not understand why MN dialed back their service pressure in the Pitt match. MN was exploited because unlike SSS, Shaff is less skilled bettering so-so passes and her set decisions are more easily read. The POY, Lilly, has wonderfully soft hands and is much less predictable in her set selection. She reversed the flow with ease and accuracy. Much as I would have liked Samedy to win it, I think the choice was correct. Rollins leaving is a plus if it creates a six-rotation opening for Wenaas. Hugh had better not lose her. Speculation about CC & surgery... whoever started that should disavow their comment or be prepared to back it up. It seemed like MN was peaking at the right time, until the last match. We have to serve tougher, pass better, and have a modicum of a middle attack so that opponent MBs have something to think about.

What specifically are/were the cliques Vbprisoner refers to? Or are there none? Haven't seen or heard of any major dissension among the team in the past several years. There was a small group of non-starters who became really tight with each other. They were a part of the transfer movement from a couple of years ago. Martin and Zeimann went to Florida State but Zeimann went there to play beach. Sara Nielsen left the same time to play at Kansas. Chemistry is always an issue in all sports but hasn't appeared to be a major issue at Minnesota. Lack of playing time is a much bigger factor.

It’s not. It loses money. Revenue is not profit Then every sport that sells tickets is a "revenue-generating sport."

At the time, she said that not playing libero was not a factor in her decision to transfer. I have no inside information, but maybe when all her friends left, she transferred to play with friends she had made during club vball.

Then every sport that sells tickets is a "revenue-generating sport." Women's volleyball at Minnesota generates more revenue than it uses up in direct costs. Revenue includes things that are very hard (unless you have in-house account level access to the true books of the athletic dept) to determine, like a donation to the school from someone who is a volleyball fan, or outright impossible to quantify like how much value volleyball brings to the BTN in viewership, etc. Also things that the U doesn't allow the athletic dept to account as revenue, like parking fees in the ramps on game nights.
And, as always, costs in college athletic departments are purposefully inflated, either in appearance or through plain old gratuitous spending, so as specifically to make it look like the dept is *not* generating profit.
This is opposed to programs like women's soccer.
There's nothing you can say to change my mind. I know I'm right, and I know you're wrong.

Thank you for this reply. Since you wrote: "There's nothing you can say to change my mind," I'll say nothing. (But you do realize, I hope, that this might mean you're talking only to yourself. Which isn't all that bad; I do it a lot too.)

I wasn’t expecting Rollins to transfer to Penn State but I can see her thriving there. Gabby Blossom is a great setter and Penn State has a lot more grit than Minnesota seems to have, even if we beat them both times this season. Best of luck to her although it will be weird seeing her wear the blue and white on the opposite side of the net. I believe this is a good opportunity for her.
