I do feel Canada was ill-prepared, but very inconsistent play from both sides. Puerto Rico was not impressive overall, and Dominican will have an easy time with either team, if they play the way they did. Canada can play much better, but unfortunately, with the setting today, they didn't have a chance (passing wasn't much better, but that is somewhat expected from the team). King can set much better, but I think she is just a little too experienced and maybe felt the pressure. I wish Black would have put in Smith a little sooner, and take the pressure off King. Disappointing. : ( PR is a weak serving team. If Canada struggled with them, DR bombing with a pumped-up home crowd before them is going to make it a short match. This makes sense. Not that Canada’s passing was atrocious, but I was surprised it held up so well against PR, but the weak serving partially explains that. Gray & Van Ryk in serve receive is not ideal.

I won’t say Canada shouldn’t be better but I don’t see how they could jump DR even with their talent. Dominicana is trending up and beat good USA teams twice this summer (they lost twice too). They also had good results against other good teams. Who is the DR’s setter next quad? Quite a bit of their players seem to be getting old. Of course, you know them better than anyone else on this board, so you can probably give a better analysis of who will and won’t return for the next quad. With almost everyone on Canada probably choosing to return, I think that’s a start. It just seems that with the DR having essentially the same team and lineup for the past 5 years, they might experience a drop in play for next quad should some of the players retire. The players from 2004 Athens might be done, but you’ll probably have to put Rivera in the orange jacket to get her off the court. — but everyone else will return next quad. De La Cruz is killing teams from the service line again, Canada doesn’t have a player close to Brayelin Martinez status. DR is in a world of trouble if Marte ever goes down, she’ll be back next quad. DR also has two very good young OH’s and promising young MB’s. They need better setting and another elite libero down the road to maintain their level. An event like this is also inspiring for the country as a whole — there isn’t anything like this here. Baseball is huge obviously but the best go to MLB.

Here's the YouTube live stream for the match between Mexico and DR.
My Spanish is somewhat rusty, but I'm hanging in there.

Ahh ok, yeah I was thinking DLC was def gonna retire after the quad. But if she’s still playing up then keep going. Yeah Marte was the player I was also thinking might retire, but then again she’s only gonna be 30 this year (i thought she was a few years older) so it def makes sense that she would do another quad at least.

Disappointing. : ( What is the reason for their poor form? Lack of adequate match experience at the international level? Black simply not cutting it as a NT coach? Simply an accurate reflection of their level of play? I would guess lack of preparation for this event and lack of experience in a match like this. They’ve definitely played much better matches than this and multiple in a row as well. But also they really do miss Bailey’s serve receive and defense. Van Ryk also seemed a bit better on the right to me as well, although she has gotten better since the summer it seems

We’re running on Dominican time here. 922 local and PR/Camada ended over an hour and a half ago but the pre-game festivities were lit!
About to start here. Also, for the very important “best hair” - Gina Mambru wins the award for this tournament despite quite a few inches from Castillo 🤣

Wait, did Brenda really do that to her hair? Please tell me that's someone else. Ok. It appears the 80s curly volume look nspired by my mom's old Glamour Shot hanging in the living room didn't make it to the court.

Well good for her, I’ve been hoping she can make it back up to 2014 level, but with Brayelin Martinez’s play she doesn’t need to. It’s good that she can keep playing at a good level for so long.

Is Dominican Republic taking the foot off the gas here? Mexico leading 9-4 in the 3rd set.
