It's their own fault honestly. They show flashes of brilliance but that is counter-acted by their lack of consistency. They are not going to make a breakthrough and join the ranks of the top tier teams unless they find a way to solve this problem. So naturally, we have to begin by asking why they have been so inconsistent. Skill issue? Mental issue? Cultural issue? Coaching issue? You have to understand the culture of Dominican Republic and also its lack of depth. I get the part about your analysis on their lack of funding, concrete surface, etc. But as to culture, forgive my lack of comprehension, but could you clarify how it contributes to volleyball difficulties in DR?

Manitoba...I've been there. Went to Winnipeg around this time of year, and f*ck is it cold! Brandon, Steinbach, Gimli, Selkirk, Portage la Praire, yeah I heard of those places. I remember one classes I attend in college, the professor teaching graduated from U of M. Well I guess as an indoor sport though, women volleyball is shielded from the weather and seasons, so that's good. Hahaha, yeah good old Winnipeg is freezing rn. Last night we were about -40 with the windchill But only at Portage and Main right? Does this mean canada will not make the olympics?

I think Canadaās chances are close to 0 now. They cannot qualify unless they come back and win here in 5 AND DR has to beat PR AND Canada has to win the points or set ratio.

I still question the subbing by Canada. Black pulls King right when she seems to have got a connection with the players for a couple of sets. Hitters looking confident. Then Smith makes a few bad sets coming in cold. Then, puts King back in and now her setting is off again? They had momentum and lost it.

Sure, he does fine with Georgia, but at the higher international level, I don't know. Yeah he led Canada to win the Challenger's Cup, but this tournament is arguably more important and we see him make a series of questionable decisions that may have adversely affected the team. Hmmm...simply lack of sufficient experience at this level or a reflection of lack of ability at the international level?

For Canada, the 2018 season that Abbondanza had with the team was their best season of the quad. Van Ryk at opposite, Cyr at setter, and Bailey was healthy too. I feel that had Abbondanza been able to stay with this team, he wouldāve used a different lineup than what we see now. So in my opinion, Black has made some questionable decisions cutting some players from the A team (Beamish, Cyr) that made huge contributions in 2018. I get that Cyr was injured to end the 2018 season, but she spent almost every point that summer with her hitters, just to get bumped down the next summer. Iām all for allowing Black to show what he can do with this team, but itās also really hard for him to do his best when he splits time with coaching Georgia. Itās seems a bit unfair for some of the Canadian players that he canāt be there full time.

To be honest, Canada has blown whatever chances that had for Olympic qualification to Tokyo, the bigger question now is what to do to prep for the next quad for Paris 2024 qualification.

Itās seems a bit unfair for some of the Canadian players that he canāt be there full time. I completely agree about Beamish and Cyr being cut from the program. Beamish had some great matches at World Championships, and she is needed for serve-receive (and she is a smart hitter). I thought Cyr set really well at World Championships as well. I had never even thought about the setting that much while she was there (because it never really seemed like that much of an issue), but have completely missed her since then. She was best server at one tournament, and her blocking was good. Now, you hear every team's game plan is to avoid the Canadian middles, and hit deep line over the setter. With Cyr and Van Ryk on the right, it wasn't that easy to exploit a weakness. I also miss how much Bailey brings to the team. She did well blocking for her size (though was still exploited at times), but her serve-receive was better, and it allowed Abbondanza to utilize Van Ryk on the opposite. I personally think Van Ryk is better at OPP (her serve-receive and passing still needs work). I find Black makes a lot of questionable substitutions, and game-time decisions. Can't necessarily fault him today for the loss. The passing was terrible, and the setting wasn't much better. Not that they were expected to beat DR, but I would have liked to see them play a cleaner match. King shows some promise at setter, and I have heard she has been doing well in practices. That said, she clearly is not ready for this level, and playing against teams like DR. She struggled with decison-making, set a lot of trap sets, low sets, poor location...I feel bad for her, but this is where I felt the coaching staff let the team down a bit. The setting affected the hitter's, and they lost confidence in the setter. Trickle affect to all areas of their game. Jen Cross played well and was able to better some of the sets in set 4. Maglio is too quick on the slide, and it is harder for her to make adjustments on the fly when those sets are off. She was also off for a really long stretch of 8-9 points in set 4. It's hard for them to feel good about what they did out there today, and yesterday. I do feel Black not being there since early August hurt them tremendously. I personally feel like Abbondanza is a much better coach than Black. I rarely, if ever, questioned his decision-making during games. In fact, he was quite the technician. I know the younger players (Van Ryk, Maglio, Bailey, Veltman) all really liked Abbondanza, but some of the older players didn't like him because he was a tougher on them than Black (and maybe didn't like the changing of the guard with some of the younger players getting playing time over them). I feel like Abbondanza would have gotten more out of this team than Black (partly because of his NCAA commitment) even without Bailey. I haven't written off Black completely, as he is getting experience at this level too, but Canada needed a more experienced, fully committed coach if they were going to have a chance. Maybe he could grow with the team over the next quad (if he chooses to stay past his two-year contract). If he does stay on, I would like to see him take a leave at Georgia in 2023/24, in order to commit to an Olympic run. Canada has some young players, and some good players in the pipeline to challenge PR and maybe even the DR in the future. Gray, Cross, Van Ryk, Maglio, Bailey all have great potential, and will get good experience playing in the VNL, and with their pro teams. Four years, without much funding, is a long-time for some of these players to make a commitment. Will Cross come back? Will Maglio decide to play beach for Canada by then? I think we may see the departure of Richey, Perrins, Smith...? Will Cyr be back with the team, or will King be the future setter? We'll have to see how the team progresses with playing the VNL this year. At least that is something for the team and fans to look forward to. Just sad they weren't better prepared for this tournament.

When the only outside hitter on your roster that can pass at a reasonable level goes down with injury, wins will come by less frequently.
