It really sucks for all the teams involved, both men’s and women’s teams. They played a WHOLE season, just for the final event to be cancelled. I get that they’re cancelling because they don’t want it to spread, but quite a few people here in Winnipeg are quite disappointed over the decision, especially considering the province’s first cases were only confirmed earlier today. While this is probably the safest move right now, it’s just so tough to imagine what these athletes are all going through. Also, I can’t see Usport granting the 5th year players another season

Also, I can’t see Usport granting the 5th year players another season I think Volleyball cancelled because hockey cancelled, and hockey cancelled because the refs were no longer sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The fact that Manitoba's first cases were confirmed Thursday probably added to the pressure to cancel on the men's side, and they couldn't cancel the men's tournament without also cancelling the women's.

Yeah, I agree on the confirmed cases pressuring this decision. It just seems pretty crazy how 12 hours ago (with knowledge of confirmed cases) the event was still going to go on full force. 6 hours ago, still go on but without fans. Then 2 hours ago they announce completely cancelled. It all happened so fast. Like I said earlier I really do think it’s the safest move, but right now it’s so devastating for those involved. I really feel for the athletes

I know this is a college thread for Canadian Volleyball, but I am wondering if anyone knows what Volleyball Canada is doing for the Canadian athletes playing in Italy (especially) and in Europe? USAV is said to be in constant contact with their athletes playing in Italy, and are monitoring the situation closely (and presumably will work to bring them home if need be). Is Canada Volleyball in touch with it's athletes (Van Ryk, Maglio, Gray, Veltman...not sure who the men players are)? I just heard that Canada Volleyball is staying in constant contact with their athletes and monitoring their wellbeing wherever they are. Assistance in getting back to Canada is offered and updates are flying back and forth between admin staff, coaches and athletes.

Any news on what will happen with Canadian USport vball next year. I know the Season starts later than the US but it looks to me like Canadians are more conservative than the US when it comes to COVID. Might there be a delay or a realignment for this year? What about admissions and the impact of the economy? Will that impact schools. I know they don’t have the same impact as US regarding budgets because they are so much smaller but will we see program cancellation or shrinkage? U Calgary Head Coach is gone, who is going to replace her? So many questions 😊😊😊

Interesting - do you mind sharing who your friend is - DM me if you want to keep it in the down low. Maybe I can figure out who the HC is from that. There has been no announcement from the school......

Of course, volleyball is a winter sport in Canada, so we only stand to lose half the season at this point.

Final decision if volleyball will go will be made by Oct 8, I have heard that some school already cut athletic scholarships for the year.

University of Alberta Bears and Pandas announced today that they will not be competing in the Canada West Conference, in Hockey, Volleyball or Basketball during the 2020/2021 season..... at all. Previously canada west had realigned competitions so that they only play institutions in their province and season would possibly begin in January for a shortened season. Final competition dates would be announced before Oct 8th. UAlberta will not be competing even if the season proceeds. Previously cancelled Football, Rugby, Soccer and all fall sports. Funnily enough they didn’t cite COVid as the reason, but financial restraints.

The Provincial government in Alberta made/is making budget cuts to universities which in normal times would hurt but which are devastating coupled with COVID-19 (as we are seeing here).
