Had preseason happened Long Beach had arranged to play one of the Pac-12 teams twice as well. There will be a lot of abnormalities this year. Playing the same team twice in preseason is not nearly as abnormal as people make it out to be. Sometimes it’s intentionally scheduled and other times two teams just happen to be invited to the two separate tournaments and they don’t mind playing each other. In this case they weren't tournaments and it's moot now anyway but my point was I would expect some abnormalities, even in conference only schedules, this year.

Well I wasn’t referring specifically to LBSU, but neither were last year’s Illinois vs. Tennessee, or Michigan/Notre Dame. Colorado/CSU many years, etc. I do think other abnormalities were going to happen, like extremely regionalized non-conferences, and then Creighton/Marquette x4 in conference. I just don’t understand what was so weird to the other posters about playing the same team twice in the non-conf. The abnormalities would have come in other ways. But, it’s all looking to be moot now anyways.

When UCLA traveled to Lincoln in 2017, the Bruins & Huskers played on back-to-back nights. We did the same thing with Hawaii in 1989, as I recall.

I don't know that I would consider something that only happens twice over a 35 year time frame to be the antithesis of abnormality, exactly.
When spread out over the entirety of D1 it might be somewhat usual as a general concept, in that it is bound to happen to somebody, somewhere at least once per season, or thereabout.
