If there is no non-conference play and the high likelihood of unbalanced schedules, I think the Big 10 getting more than 5 at large teams seems like a high bar to meet, in particular, if it's for a bid for a team that hasn't had a winning season in over 3 years. Especially with only 16 at-large selections. The 16 spots cut were all at-large teams ... while it's quite likely that at least one conference will not end up sending a team (if MBB is any guide), I'd expect most of the smaller conferences to send someone, and the teams who will miss out would mostly be the middle-of-the-pack power-conference teams. One-eighth of the field from the Big Tenteen is certainly possible, but what's already been mentioned here and other places - and also by Shondell in post-scrimmage comments - is that the conference will be really tough this season. If several of last year's NCAA teams don't make it, asking OSU to jump all of them is probably too much in 2020/1. Frankly, if no Big 10 team is playing non-conference, having a "deep" conference probably doesn't do the Big 10 a bunch of favors this year if they are trying to get more than 4 or 5 at large teams. Unless those middle Big 10 teams are taking matches off of the top teams, it's not going to look very good for a bunch of teams with 6-8 losses.

Good point - wouldn't be a surprise to me if the at-large process was mostly just going down to a certain position in each conference, say 5th in Big Tenteen/Pac-12, 3rd in SEC, etc. Even if some conferences are playing non-conference matches, there likely wouldn't be enough to have a good feel for relative strengths, and since this is kind of an asterisk season anyway I wouldn't imagine the selection committee would jump through major hoops that would help out power-conference bubble teams. They'll just fill the field the best they can, get through this, and hope that 2021 plays out like 2019.

Good point, and it makes me wonder if the conference might slightly factor that into the schedule. For example, they might be more willing to maximize the number of projected top:bottom team matchups. Certainly not as the only factor (i.e., well behind maximizing safety and cost), but maybe it could be a third order factor.
Totally speculating here, by the way.

Does anyone have any insight on Renner? How is her recovery? Will she be able to contribute in Spring? Not the end of the world if not, because Bush is awesome - but scary not to have anyone else on the roster with her who is healthy. Renner redshirted and now will conceivably have this spring and then 4 years to play.

Renner redshirted and now will conceivably have this spring and then 4 years to play. I think she's practicing, but its limited. Here's the last update from zlionsfan about her: First match in the books - they're playing two today. 13 players suited up - Hornung (close contact), Torrance (quarantine ending, I think - she is in Holloway and coaching), Newton (unspecified injury) and Myers are out, with Nichol filling in as a welcome throwback to my first years as a Purdue VB fan. Kind of hard to see everything since there's a fixed camera, but Shondell has been doing PBP, which is really, really helpful. They've been working a lot on aiming high hands and avoiding hitting errors; still have a ways to go on that. Serves haven't been great but some of that is from players new to the role (Koch, I think, is one of the players who's serving now and didn't last year). Shondell also mentioned that they have not had their first team together as a unit yet, which makes sense since there aren't any matches coming (yet). Plus right now, they're missing their top libero and OH anyway. Renner looks like she's doing well enough, which is good since you know. Otec has been playing well, not sure but the best one on the court might be Nichol, lol. I'm looking forward to watching her in Athletes Unlimited in February - I got into the softball stuff late but it was still really neat, and I think it's a format that would work really well for VB. It'll be nice to see Sherridan as well, don't think there are any other former Boilers (yet) who are in.

Here we go Boilers! We'll be meeting every B1G team with the exception of Maryland and Nebraska (with a home and away match against Indiana) http://instagram.com/p/CJbedEOglPr

Houston, do we have a problem? I know Newton was not present at the end of the fall “season.” I have not seen her playing on court in any of the social media posts. The one image I saw of her she was on the sidelines with ice on her knee.
Other thoughts heading into spring, I really like Chinn. She is my favorite of the young pins. I hope she breaks out. I am really curious who the starting middles will be. I’m assuming Trammell and Johnson.

It's always so hard for me to tell from the social media video montages what is recent and what is a collection of past practices. Without her, it's surely a disadvantage just because her back row pipe is so good, along with her serve and blocking, but I think the three returning sophomores can be effective if Newton's absence is temporary. We have three solid back row players (Hornung, Otec, and Schimmerhorn) who can all give us the ball control if Newton's unavailable. Having Cleveland as a 6-rotation OPP give us that extra outlet too. Chinn is, by far, my favorite of the returning sophomores as well. She's got power, smart shots, I think she can grow into an even better blocker too. Hope she's taking reps as a passer. It seemed like Koch was the only active passer of the three last year. I think the middles will be Johnson and Trammel too but it's nice to have that extra depth and size this year just in case.

So this is not for the 2020 season but Purdue doesn’t have a recruiting thread but man Dave Shondell liked a tweet showing a very impressive Jordyn Byrd flying and slamming a ball down. She’s followed by Oklahoma vball and some Wisconsin folk. Damn impressive.

Okay we're roughly 3 days away from our first match of the season against the No. 1 team, Wisconsin!
Starters predictions? Who gets the libero jersey? Who has the 2nd OH spot? Who are we playing in the middle?

Who are we playing in the middle? Hornung at Libero (this is still cracking out to be very competitive in my surprising opinion), Chinn at OH, we will see Koch in some way, shape, or form (double sub?), Trammel and Johnson in the middle. There are several positions that I believe are being competed for everyday in the gym, and I think that is a good thing.

There are several positions that I believe are being competed for everyday in the gym, and I think that is a good thing. Yeah, the libero situation is so close IMO. I'm only 100% on Newton, Cleveland at OPP, Johnson, and Bush, though I'm like 90% on Trammel. I'm hoping for Chinn, but I've seen quite a few videos of Ellis playing with who I think are the starters. Would love to see Koch in the mix. Schimerhorn will definitely be in there, possibly as the DS for Cleveland but I've seen a lot of videos of her in middle back too (I wonder if Newton's prior injury means they'll start her off as front row only?). Terwilliger is a definite, though I think Johnson is going to get some serving time for herself. But this Otec/Hornung battle is the one where I'm truly just 🤷🏾♂️ Either way, I agree: I love a competitive gym. Shows so much promise for the future.

Is ellis the front runner to be opposite of Newton? Thought Chinn was turning heads this fall camp?
