Watching the Purdue/Michigan replay (the one that works 😒) and:
▪︎ Maddy freaking Chinn! What a revelation she's turning into. She's hitting smart. She's putting up a great block. But what really had me 🤯 was that she was in the passing rotation when Jones was serving and put up several great passes. She has such a solid future as a 6-rotation player.
▪︎ Bush is having herself a season. Her growth has been really fantastic. I'll admit I was ready to bench her in favor of Renner last year, but she's doing some really great things. And her defense is better than it's ever been. I love when she sets the D-ball to Newton!
▪︎ Trammel is a beast. That's it. Going to enjoy watching her for the next few years.
▪︎ Johnson is also filling that loss of Mohler's offense extremely well.
▪︎ I'm so happy to have Cleveland back.
▪︎ And I'm so happy for Otec. She's playing the best she's ever been in her senior season. She used losing the libero jersey last year as fuel to get better and now she's passing at a high level while really holding down the back row defense.
▪︎ Speaking of: can we get another few years of Hornung/Otec in the back row? They have to be the best defensive duo Purdue has ever had. Add in the way Bush is playing and it's hard to get a ball down when those three are in the back court.
If Purdue can stay healthy, get Newton back to a consistent level of offense, keep working on rotation 1, and maintain this serve/block game, there's a bright future ahead for this team.

I didn't want to quote the whole post, and not to degrade Hornung/Otec at all, but I think the Miller/Mastandrea/Dildine trio was probably the best Purdue back row group ever. They helped raise the level of the program when they didn't have the firepower at the net (at least equivalent at the time, as players have gotten bigger and more physical) that the current squad has. That has been a long time ago, though. I am old. Still, back row play was how Purdue made the initial leap from near the bottom of the league to perennially dangerous squad.

I have loved watching Purdue volleyball through the years as well. Miller/Mastandrea/Dildine were amazing. I also have to show love to Nichol/Ehlers/Cramer. People still talk about Cramer breaking a chair at IU diving for a ball. It’s nice to see the same intensity this year.

Why isn’t joy Chen on the roster anymore? She’s a genius and graduated undergrad in like two years and moved on to grad school. Kudos to her.

This Purdue team is only going to get stronger and stronger as Cait Newton and Grace Cleveland continue to get healthier. The Boilers had Minnesota down 2-1 back to back nights over a week ago and led 21-18 in set 4 on night 2 before Samady and Co. stormed back from behind to force a 5th set. This Purdue team is for real and anyone who watched the Boilers win back to back matches in Ann Arbor this past weekend witnessed an extremely dangerous team of Boilers who are going to be very tough to beat moving forward.

I would argue this Purdue supporting cast is so much stronger than in years' past too. Trammel and Jael are so fun to watch and Chinn is really coming into her own this season. Lets not even get started on the defense, they are so scrappy and effective, it is frustrating to watch if you're cheering for the opposing team! I think Purdue is really onto something this season and next (even without Cait).

I’d like some consistency at that outside position, though I see why it’s been tough to choose.

I’d like some consistency at that outside position, though I see why it’s been tough to choose. Chinn was the front runner in the fall practices according to a few reports. She had a tough first night against Wisconsin, then switched to OPP to fill in for Cleveland while she was out, then had her own minor injury bug during the Minnesota matches. I'd say she's locked that spot down, but also think it's good to have Koch or Ellis step in if she struggles. Those three are the future at the pins once Newton and Cleveland move on. We need them getting the reps.

I think that is a safe bet. My understanding is Chinn was expected to be the front runner this Spring until the Cleveland illness and that really messed with things and then Chinn had a shoulder issue prior to Minnesota. I also want to see consistency in that position.

According to the podcast Dig City, it seems that all 3 ladies (Koch, Ellis, and Chinn) should all see playing time. It seems like a revolving door on their position. Coach Shondell says that each person has strengths that may benefit the team more an any given night against each opponent. He thinks highly of all 3 and thinks that each lady has earned playing time. It’s an embarrassment of riches it seems. I’m concerned that one or more of the ladies will be unhappy about playing time and will transfer. I’d be disappointed, but understand that players/competitors want to play/compete.
