According to the podcast Dig City, it seems that all 3 ladies (Koch, Ellis, and Chinn) should all see playing time. It seems like a revolving door on their position. Coach Shondell says that each person has strengths that may benefit the team more an any given night against each opponent. He thinks highly of all 3 and thinks that each lady has earned playing time. It’s an embarrassment of riches it seems. I’m concerned that one or more of the ladies will be unhappy about playing time and will transfer. I’d be disappointed, but understand that players/competitors want to play/compete. While I hear him... I think Chinn looks like the CLEAR front runner. She's hitting very efficiently so far. Outside of the first match, she's yet to hit below .300. Her block is pretty strong too.. I would like them to go to her more imo... Especially when Newton isn't getting the kills

She was talking about Chinn during one of the Iowa matches on the radio. Too bad we cannot replay radio broadcasts. I’d like listening to the Purdue broadcasts.

As she should, the clear heartbeat to this team and the amount levels this team elevated with her presence is outstanding...

Does Purdue only focus on developing right sides?

Does Purdue only focus on developing right sides? Did you watch Newton freshman year?

Does Purdue only focus on developing right sides? Purdue does do a good job developing the right side. They’ve also done a nice job developing setters in the past (who have come in with limited setting experience). Purdue also had two 1st team AA middles in my time. I’m not sure what the issue with the outside is. Ariel Turner was impressive. Stahl showed flashes but offensively was inconsistent. Alexa Smith left to go closer to home. Sometimes I think it is more of an issue with recruiting a good 6 rotation outside. Purdue was in the hunt for Temi and Eggleston and both did not happen. A real shame... especially Temi. I know you meant that comment in fun, but I literally got on here to post some thoughts about my hopes for Chinn and Ellis on the outside next year after both had good days at OSU. You sparked some thoughts. I think also Hornung coming in will be a nice DS for Ellis.

I think you are underestimating how difficult it is to be a 6-rotation hitter in the Big Ten. Essentially, if you are one of these coveted players, you WILL be the target on serve receive which is a huge responsibility. I don't think you can even bring up Alexa Smith in a development conversation as she only stayed one year and came in with Team USA experience. Purdue, being a top program but not what I would consider THE top tier, does not routinely get the Egglestons, Halls, Plummers etc. of the vball world, but what I love about Purdue is they are REALLY good at finding the hidden talent that may have been overlooked by other schools and developing those players (Adelaja and Mohler, and look at Johnson now). Granted these examples are middles but obviously development definitely is there.
The post about the opposites just goes to show that the coaching staff does a really good job of working with what they have and getting the most out of the players. In the past couple of years there were players who were really terminal, so they flourished on the right side and as a result, their system focused on that. In years past when middles were the focus you could see how the system catered to the middle attack. Then, you had the everything player in Turner who just did everything for the Boilers and was set 40% of the time.
I think that coaching staff recruits OHs with the intention of them being 6 rotation players - Epenesa, Stahl, Chinn, Newton, Ellis, all fit this type of mold. You can even look at Hiliary Fox as an example, as she was a 6'1 DS at Purdue (and a REALLY GOOD one) but she was recruited as an OH.
With a team as defensively minded as Purdue, 6 ro development is hindered because a DS is a better choice for ball control, at the expense of an extra hitting option and ultimately player development.

http://instagram.com/p/CNalwU-hlO2 This has to feel so good for Otec. She started 2019 as the libero, was great defensively, but lost the starting gig because of passing issues. She persevered, came back this season stronger, has really put on a show in the back court, and it has shown. Really proud of her journey as a Boilermaker. Here's hoping she gets an All American nod.
