Is the coronavirus a threat to the upcoming 2020 college women's vb season? The men's vb season is a casualty, as was all spring and winter NCAA sports. Plus the NBA, NHL, and some other pro leagues I've never heard of. The NFL is "monitoring the situation," which means "we don't have a clue right now, but we'll have a better clue in a few months after we run some number $$$." Poll #1: What will become of the 2020 College Women's Volleyball season? Total votes: 130 (by 130 users) It will go on as usual, buddy, calm the f*** down | 88 (67.69%) | "Social distanced" spectator seats only | 1 (0.77%) | It will go on with no spectators; stream only | 4 (3.08%) | First half suspended, but resume second half | 7 (5.38%) | First half normal, but suspended in second half | 1 (0.77%) | Complete suspension as viral numbers hit the roof | 26 (20.00%) | Other | 3 (2.31%) |
Poll #2: What will happen in Fall 2020? Total votes: 122 votes (by 122 users) Actual classes held; vb season normal | 51 votes (41.80%) | Actual classes held (social dist); abbreviated vb season | 16 votes (13.11%) | Actual classes held (social dist); no vb season | 3 votes (2.46%) | Online classes only; abbreviated vb season | 19 votes (15.57%) | Online classes only; no vb season | 31 votes (25.41%) | No classes; no vb season | 2 vote (1.64%) |
Poll #3: What will the women's vb schedule look like this Fall 2020? Same ol' same ol': Fall camp in August + regular season | 33 votes (27.73%) | Fall camp in early September + some pre-conference | 12 votes (10.08%) | Fall camp in late September + in-conference (full) only | 38 votes (31.93%) | Fall camp in October + in-conference (abbreviated) only | 2 votes (1.68%) | No matches; season cancelled | 34 votes (28.57%) |
Total: 119 votes by 119 voters Poll #4: If the 2020 season is delayed until 2021, what will the 2021 season look like? Season starts in Jan/Feb; ALL teams, ALL conf; NCAAs in Apr/May 14 votes (28.00%) Season starts in Jan/Feb; ALL teams, ALL conf; no NCAAs 1 vote (2.00%) Season starts in Jan/Feb; SOME teams, SOME conf; NCAAs in Apr/May 1 vote (2.00%) Season starts in Jan/Feb; SOME teams, SOME conf; no NCAAs 0 votes (0%) Full Season starts in Fall 2021; NCAAs in Dec 2021 27 votes (54.00%) Abbrev Season starts in Fall 2021; no NCAAs 1 vote (2.00%) Other (please specify) 6 votes (12.00%) Total votes: 50 votes by 50 voters.

Well, yeah, everything is threatened by coronavirus. No, I'm not "panicked" and I don't expect the season to be a zero, but anybody who believes that this virus stuff is overblown is very confused...or maybe just a Republican.

Hopefully they can create a tested vaccine before summer.

They had a Johns Hopkins professor on today who said that Pandemics never last more than 3 months in one place. Assuming people who have the disease are then immune, once enough people have been infected it's much harder for the disease to spread. Most of the country should be in the thick of this by the start of April, it would seem that this should be resolved by July, in time to get things put back on track for September.

The Big West Conference (and others) has suspended all games through March.
So,...if, we can be slightly optimistic,...normal programming will start up again on April Fool's Day.
I hope.

We may be okay for a delayed, September start. I think there will be no out of conference games to kick off the season. Teams will use that time to get back in shape and prepare. I suspect we are losing precious gym, strength and conditioning time especially if parts of the country go into lockdown mode. Fun times folks 😕

That’s a scenario I believe most of the planet could live with.

If people follow recommendations from doctors and public health officials, don’t panic. If people are dumb and ignore expert scientific advice, make sure you have a towel. 42

Hard to say at this point whether reinfection is a possibility since COVID-19 is in the Corona family of viruses. Probably best hope for controlling future outbreaks is for either a pretty effective vaccine or therapy.

Yep, it's difficult because most of the info is coming from the Chinese government who have, so far, shown scant regard for veracity - with a govt official even suggesting that the virus was brought to Wuhan by U.S. military - but there's certainly no confirmation that there's any kind of long lasting immunity after recovery. The number I've seen from cases in China is a 14% reinfection rate.

Well, volleyball has one thing going for it: It's during football season. This is just personal opinion, but I feel the NCAA, ESPN and the powers that be wouldn't have been as swift to cancel football season if that was occurring today. So, they aren't going to cancel volleyball if they don't cancel football. To my knowledge, it's unclear whether warmer weather will slow the virus' progression. That information is just not known yet since the onset of this virus occurred in the winter and spring months. www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/03/12/world/science-health-world/will-heat-stop-coronavirus/#.Xm2pQOtKh-UThat being said, there's talks of football season starting but possibly not finishing as we get into the cooler months. nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/why-experts-doubt-warm-weather-will-slow-coronavirus-spread.htmlThe most important things we can all do today to protect our precious volleyball season is 1) Protect ourselves and 2) Prevent the spread of misinformation where we can. Be responsible and stay home as much as possible. Wash your hands. We live in a world where every image or meme posted on social media is taken as fact. Question items that have no sources. There's an image going around for example that coronavirus lives in the throat for 4 days so, if you get a sore throat, you should gargle salt water to kill it. This in fact has no basis in reality. Imagine if folks think this is true and that they've cured themselves then go around infecting everyone. If you have a political bone in your body (or even a bone with some empathy), consider the following: 1) Call your Senator so they support the coronavirus aid package on Monday. While it's by no means comprehensive enough (it only applies to about 20% of the American workforce), whatever can do to keep as many sick people at home and fed, the better. www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-vote-friday-democrats-coronavirus-relief-package-n11583062) Consider voting for candidates up and down the ballot who support greater access to healthcare (less hoops, less cost). We're only as healthy as our weakest neighbor. It's not ok to cut costs in healthcare and education when we have a military that can blow up the moon (hyperbole). 3) Consider admonishing those responsible for cutting the US pandemic response team and having poor testing capabilities available. In that regard, once testing is available, get tested if you feel you may have it so you can be treated and self quarantine appropriately. www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-testing-covid-19-tests-per-capita-chart-us-behind-2020-3 theintercept.com/2020/03/14/trump-says-no-idea-pandemic-response-team-disbanded-thats-true/Aaaand now I'll step off my soapbox.
