I have nothing but respect for AAU keeping their commitment to the mission of giving young athletes a platform to compete, even in these trying times. It would be much easier to fold your tent and stay home this year..... maybe next year and beyond. My biggest criticism of the organization has been the focus on $$ instead of athletes, but I don’t see any money being made this week, just a venue for those who choose to compete to be able to do so. I hope when fall comes around, the NCAA and Athletic Conferences around the country have the same commitment to let schools who deem it safe enough, compete for a national championship! In other words, just enough teams stayed in the tournament for AAU to not lose money, so they put everyone at risk -- in Florida and beyond. Admirable indeed. My guess is that Orange County is the one who pushed for the tournament to go on. Not AAU. They are desperate to help out the tourism industry.

Thanks for the link. I only get to watch a minute as I am not a member, but some pretty strong play on some courts. To me, it doesn't look empty, maybe 60% of what I am used to seeing for density at a regional/national event.

They’re irresponsible and border line complicit

Everyone there made the decision to go, despite the health risks. Or they think the health risks are made up. Not a single parent there should open up their mouth and complain. They made the choice to be there. The ones that do just want someone else to say no, so they don’t have to say no to their DD, something they probably never do.

comments section is best part of that article! quick view of 12 live games in 15 and 16s this morning show total rosters of 272 players, 11.33/team. So not much above the normal club team roster of 10. But certainly does not look like 20 chaperones at each court and didn't notice any benches with more than 2 coaches. Looks empty for sure. Still don't think this tournament was wise for any team that isn't local, especially since most of these girls will be getting back right before high school practices start.

I'm still curious how these outlets are getting the 17,000 number. That sounds like a big exaggeration, even if you count both waves of teams who well never be in the building at the same time.

I'm still curious how these outlets are getting the 17,000 number. That sounds like a big exaggeration, even if you count both waves of teams who well never be in the building at the same time. It is strange as that number has been cited numerous times for a few weeks, even as teams attending went down. No where does latest story indicate 17,000 at the same time, " The tournament is expected to host roughly 17,000 athletes and staff throughout the various age groups and genders.", maybe their figure is coming from total of people coming to OCCC region for the tournament. But they also were inaccurate in teams participating, "This is actually a scaled-back version of the tournament reducing the normal 3,000 teams to about 500.", which, 500 x 30 per team = 15,000, and then throw in another 2,000 support workers for OCCC? or are including family that does not attend the event directly. I think many families have used AAU non "stay to play" policy and proximity to Disney as reason to plan summer vacation around this event. Agree stories about the event have done a horrible job identifying attendees, but doesn't change the fact teams from areas that have not in midst of surging cases should not be attending. It is irresponsible for adults to be making those decisions for their communities (unless they all intend on 14 day quarantine when they get home...)
