Figured I might as well make this thread while I'm bored in quarantine.
Baylor is coming off their most historic run in program history. A trip to the Final Four, a Big 12 Championship, and both the National Coach and Player of the Year awards. They lose some key players but have a good group returning next season (hopefully), led by Big 12 and National Player of the Year, Yossiana Pressley. Her level of play is enough for Baylor to see a lot of success but she'll have some talent around her as well with Lockin, McGhee, van der Mark and Bramschreiber returning as starters.
Lost to graduation: Tara Wulf, L Shelly Stafford, MB Hannah Fluegel, S Nicole Thomas, MB Braya Hunt, DS/S Gia Milana, OH
Newcomers: Cassie Davis, 6'4, OH (Freshman) Giselle Vogel, 5'11, S/OPP (Freshman) Lauren Harrison, 6'0, OH (transfer from UNC) Laché Harper, 6'2, MB (grad transfer from UCF) Andressa Parise, 6'3, MB (transfer from St. Petersburg College)
Here's the roster breakdown
Outside Hitters: Yossiana Pressley, 6'0, Sr Lauren Harrison, 6'0, R-So KJ Johnson, 5'9, So Sara Jones, 5'11, R-Fr Campbell Bowden, 6'1, R-Fr Cassie Davis, 6'4, Fr
Opposites: Marieke van der Mark, 6'6, R-Jr Bri Coleman, 6'0, Jr AJ Koele, 6'1, R-SO
Middles: Kara McGhee, 6'4, So Laché Harper, 6'2, MB, Gr Andressa Parise, 6'3, MB, Jr
Setters: Hannah Lockin, 6'1, Sr Callie Williams, 5'9, R-Jr Giselle Vogel, 5'11, Fr
Libero/DS: Emily Van Slate, 5'7, R-Jr Shanel Bramschreiber, 5'7, Jr Jena Kelly, 5'8, R-Fr Gabby Brown, 5'8, R-Fr

Harper might even be a better blocker than Stafford was. Stafford of course is the better hitter, setter, defender... but that’s okay!
I hope that Lockin has an excellent year too! Hannah is an excellent blocker, defender, server, and attacking setter. Her hands of course are criticized, but people vastly underestimate how much she brought to the table besides that.

Very strong offensive players, led obviously by Pressley but I'm excited to see McGhee, VDM and Harrison too.
My concern is a notable lack of ball control, especially at the pins. The Bears lose 3 of their 4 best passers in Wulf, Milana & Hunt. Those players accounted 1300 of Baylor's 1870 passes from 2019 on a roster which passed well overall: 56.1% good pass percentage as a team - Texas was 49.8%.
Wulf was a very good passer (61% good pass), Bramschreiber and Milana were both good (~57% good pass) and Hunt was OK (53%). Pressley was liability in SR (38.7%). Transfer Lauren Harrison, also a terminal player, was somehow worse at passing than Yoss in 2019 (38.1%).
Interested see if they end up switching to a 2 player SR, like PSU did in 2019 with 3 pins who couldn't pass.

I always wondered about the Bears of Baylor. Here's a historical picture of Brazos, former Baylor Bear mascot ...

Baylor ran a two player serve receive a few seasons ago with Jana Brusek and Aniah Philo and they were pretty good at that. Brown and Bowden redshirted their first year but they received a lot of praise from the coaching staff and others for their performance as practice players. Coach McGuyre said Bowden was the most impressive freshman last summer. Her and Brown just had to wait their time behind the seniors. I’m hoping they’ll be good replacements in the backrow.

It is obviously more challenging to pass 2 than 3. Baylor would need a capable Libero and two good DSs but effective communication between them is also vital. Bramschreiber has always been a leader so it'll depend how well the DSs could handle it I think.

Lockin’s all-around game has grown so much as she does a lot of things really well. We all know she’s not the best pure-setter but the girl is an athlete and helps Baylor win matches. I’m wondering how Callie Williams fits into the picture. Lockin can really swing too, though she hasn’t had to besides in spring ball. A 6-2 with Lockin playing all the way around wouldn’t surprise me.

I had never watched any BU matches before this past year. I DID know that they were a program on a fast-rising trajectory. I viewed the two Texas matches, a smidge of the Reg Final v. UDub, + the National Semi versus WIS. It seemed to me that against their toughest competition...when their passing went South...then they sputtered. To my eye, passing again will be a key in '20.
But when they were "on" (esp. with good passing from the front row), they SMOKED.

Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.

Exciting time to be a Baylor fan. Baylor will only continue to improve and stay consistent. From what I heard, Bowden will be more than an adequate passing replacement. I doubt Baylor will run a 6-2. Top level teams just don't run a 6-2. With passing, having a tall setter on the net is also huge, so I doubt they will opt for the shorter Williams, who still has great hands by the way.
Really interested to see the schedule McGuyre comes up with. His 2019 schedule worked in Baylor's favor, but they consistently played tough preseason matches. I hope they will continue to do the same this upcoming season.
