So tell me, which volleyball match(es) were the most painful to watch emotionally? Ones that still sting after the match was over. Personally, the 1997 championship match between Stanford and Penn State was particular painful for me to watch for some reason:
Internationally, the US vs Serbia semi-final still stings for me even after 4 years. Had Foluke Akinradewo not been injured...
So what about you?

Super Bowl XIX, January 1985 Miami Dolphins vs. San Francisco 49ers 49ers won, 38-16
Dolphins defense could not stop the 49ers offense and Dan Marino had a "human" game in what was a historic season for him (48 passing TDs; 5,000+ passing yards)
I lost a $5 bet.
Still stings.
It was the beginning of the end of my declining interest in football.

2001 WS game 7, when do you ever bring the infield in with Rivera on the mound and all those broken bat bloops he intices!

Seeing their faces right after that 5th set crushed me. I drove to Manhattan Beach and sat on a bench on the pier and I swear, a tear rolled down my face. That’s how over dramatic I was. The bronze two days later helped a bit. Trying to be be optimistic for gold 2021 Tokyo. I almost yelled after the final point followed by a sense of crushing disappointment. Then after a while, after I recovered my calmness, I have to give credit to Serbia for playing a standout match. US...missed chances?

ironhammer I agree about the USA vs Serbia semi-final being painful to watch again. Mostly cuz I hate watching bad volleyball. Horrible serving. Shaky passing - Serbia passed better than USA. Streaky setting. Tentative/bad hitting right into block. Once Foluke went out, only Karsta did anything noteworthy on USA side.

The last match of the previous pool which unexpectedly goes to three, then ends in a way that forces a tiebreaker all while you're waiting to start your afternoon pool on that court.

And during the tiebreaker, you notice someone from the scorekeepers table signal to the R2. Then the R1 comes over. Suddenly, they are waiting for the head ref...and you know that you are never going home.

Texas vs Penn state in the 2009 championship 😔 That Texas team had some pretty darn good players, Faucette, Doris, Engle and of course Adams and Hooker went on to become NT players. But you have to give credit to Hodge for turning around Penn State when it was down 2-0 and that championship-winning final kill.

Anything involving WI vs. Stanford.
Or any Big Ten vs. Stanford, unless it's Nebraska losing to Stanford.
