The big issue in SoCal is gym space. Many clubs rent gym space from middle schools and high school. With Covid those gyms are all shut down. Unless a program has their own gym space, no good way to do privates unless you go outside. Paying 100 per hour for grass or blacktop is a bit of a stretch. Programs with their own gym space are at a huge advantage at the moment...at least in SoCal. Some of those clubs are looking into creating their own facilities in the meantime, which are not ideal, but it’s something. There is also a bit of a dynamic that Basketball (which shares courts with Volleyball in many cases) is slower to start back up due to the complete lack of distancing. This is giving volleyball a bit of a chance to swoop in and get good breaks on unused courts. I have seen a couple of situations where a gym that was primary BBall with Volleyball working around BBall go to a long term lease to a volleyball club as it was guaranteed income for the gym and BBall is a question mark right now. Again...the clubs with the gym space are going to be at a huge advantage going into tryouts. The clubs out in neighborhood parks are going to look pretty quant compared to clubs like seal beach that have a 4 court gym. My kids are not with Seal Beach, but they have a nice facility...

Is this true? AAU basketball tourneys are up and running at local facilities near me. But not volleyball (although there wouldn’t typically be volleyball tournaments now, so that could be why).

Is this true? AAU basketball tourneys are up and running at local facilities near me. But not volleyball (although there wouldn’t typically be volleyball tournaments now, so that could be why). I may be off on this, but I don't see any basketball being played near me and it is specifically called out on our counties FAQs (which they claim are legally binding) that "Youth sports training, conditioning and physical education is now permitted in XXXX County when those activities include continuous physical distancing of at least six feet and a stable cohort, i.e. the same children at each meeting. Teams, classes, and other youth sports activities that involve contact, competitive or team play are not permitted" So I think you could run kids through drills, but scrimmage would not be allowed. I am sure privates are being run here or there, but I think Basketball is behind volleyball in our area. Obviously, you can't really play proper volleyball within these guidelines either, but you certainly can have a meaningful practice.

So if you are a coach what would you do now? As an asst. I was told my job would be furloughed and potentially not brought back. I found another job within the University to keep insurance and have gone on staff at a local club to help make up for the lost income. I am actually making more now and working less hours!

Well, good for you. I really am unsure if it is good for me. My goal has always been to coach collegiate volleyball (my spouse is the breadwinner!), but with the season being in the spring and me taking on a salary position with a club means I am not going to be coaching college volleyball this year, and I do not believe that they will add the position back for next fall because of the current financial standings of not only my university, but most universities where an asst. volleyball coach is not "important" staffing. So I do not know if I will be coaching college volleyball again any time in the near future.

Lots of people want to move out of cities into the Burbs or Exurbs. Once you get them relocated and COVID is pretty much history you can start up a new club.
