www.avca.org/Blog/Article/64/What-you-Need-to-Know-when-Adding-a-Beach-ProgramMoving from indoor to beach only would not be something most student athletes would do. You would be going from getting a full ride for indoor to getting a partial for beach. I think Kaylee Glagau got an indoor scholarship so she now can play both and is on a full ride. I doubt any of the crossovers would go that route and give up a full scholarship and go beach only. Does not make economic sense. That article is from about 5 years ago. Is it relevant to the current rules? Well....I don’t remember any changes to the rules so I am assuming the rules are still in play. There are still a maximum of 6 scholarships allowed to be awarded so no change there. www.ncsasports.org/beach-volleyball/scholarships

A big-time 2022 recruit seems to have de-committed from another school. Wondering if they're still considering Hawai'i

Is this the gal who committed to Baylor, or was she a 2021? I don’t think it’s Alicia Andrew. She is a 2021 and is still Baylor bound. I don’t think we have any scholarship available for 2022 so even if somebody de commit, there may be no room for her. Matias will get one of the scholarship and read we in on an international one who is supposed to be very good.

I also don’t know if Ikenaga is on scholarship. She was announced as “added” rather than “signed”, similar to how Springborn was announced. It might be possible that we get Matias, the rumored international, and the top domestic recruit that might have de-committed for the 2022 class.

I sure do miss the indoor team

Yes, those rules are still in play. The rule is still active and not just related to indoor/beach volleyball. The NCAA has a hierarchy of sports and the “higher” sport needs to pay the scholarship of any dual sport athlete. Women’s basketball is higher on the list than women’s volleyball so any basketball/volleyball player’s scholarship is charged to women’s basketball. I believe when Tui was playing football/volleyball at UH, he was on a football scholarship.

You are correct that there is a hierarchy that includes all sports - separate ranking for men and women's sports. On Tui, it would most definitely be football as football is the #1 sport on the men's hierarchy with basketball second. You are also correct that basketball is first among the women's sports and volleyball is second. That's why you rarely see a top women's volleyball recruit also playing basketball.

Not counting her out. She is probably the heir apparent to BVS at OH2 but it will be next to impossible to unseat BVS, if she comes back. Mia will have to wait her turn. Annika could take over for Hellvig at OPP and Leoniak will push for PT at OH1. Both have size and international experience. De Goede is more a raw recruit, has a ways to develop. She hasn't risen to senior national team status like Hellvig and hasn't gotten double digit kills in international play like Hellvig. Westerberg, with her deadly arm and blocking skills, is ahead of De Goede. Netherlands is a whole different animal than Sweden in volleyball, sweden is not close in talent overall.

Igiede has moved up to the #1 beach flight with BVS. Waggoner is also doing well on the sand. How many beach players get scholarships? Will the coaches move some indoor players to beach scholarships to make room for more indoor players/transfers? It is much more likely a beach player would play indoor. Jaime Santer can hammer the ball. Napoleon would make a good libero etc but the wahine may get a transfer libero

Yeah this year will likely be crazy, a lot of people who want to come back but don't have scholarships guaranteed. And the fallout is likely to last the next several years.
That said, if our seniors come back we might not have any room either.

To my understanding, seniors who decided to return are not going to be given the 12 scholarship available. Each school must raise funds to bring the seniors back another year. Case in point, the men's seniors are all back from funds the program raised.
I could be wrong, but pretty sure about this.
Regardless, this just reiterates the reality there will be a lot of transfers after this season is done. Hopefully the Wahine roster will remain intact. There's a lot of build off of.
As for beach coming indoors, that's a whole different story. If Glagau remains on the indoor team, for example, it will be interesting to see if she makes any immediate impact. This may or may not open the door more for beach to indoor, but at the end of the day women's indoor gets 12 scholarships and I have no doubt Ah Mow and company can utilize all 12 on the best indoor players they can recruit.
